Buying a PreOwned PS2

Hey guys I'm looking at purchasing a V4 from my local EB (in Australia) now I'm wondering if I should go ahead and get this even though I don't particularly know how old or how abused the laser would be.
EDIT: I forgot to add specifically that it has a 35002 Serial.

Or is it much more worthwhile looking around for a V7 or V9/V10?

I am looking at getting it modded if that counts for anything.

well if it's cheap enough I would abd pick up a laser to replace it with... just for when it does go bad.

go for the v7 EB games will let you look at the serial that way you can get whatever version you want before you buy it.

Thanks for the replies, I finally found me a V7 - Yay!!!
It's got a 39002 serial. Just one thing though, the dvd tray doesn't come out 100% smoothly. When opening, towards the end of the full open I can notice a bit more friction at that part and it makes a weird noise.

That is normal wear and tear of the ps2. Nothing to worry about.
