Ok, bit of a long story here. Ages ago, there was a picture revealed of how to wire a 9V battery to open the CD drive, well, I followed this picture, it didn't work, I tried several more times, trying on a different point worked. But then, the blue LED for the eject button didn't light and the drive didn't open. So, I opened to PS2 and used my multimeter to test for broken fuses, it found two. Well, I replaced these with a line of solder, one of which I think I did a sloppy job.
Well anyway, I finished that, put it all back together, turned the switch, pressed eject to turn on, the fan powered and then, blue smoke poured out and everything switched off. Opening it again, it shows that the IC has lost one of its pegs, it has literally burnt off and singed other things around it. Now, I'm crap at soldering, that's established. So I probably couldn't replace this IC myself, any other solutions maybe? I'd be willing to get someone else to do it with cost wasn't too high, I'm from Birmingham, UK.

Ah yes, feeding an external source of voltage into the system is a bad idea. This probably damaged the BA chip you linked, which is the one responsible for driving the tray

And simply bridging fuses is the stupidest idea EVER conceived, and this is why. The fuses are there to protect the playstation. They blow to protect the board and other chips from excessive damage when part of the system dies. Simply bridging them if they blow allows the faulty chip/connection to continue cooking and sending voltage to other parts of the console, that can result in extensive damage or fire.

I imagine the PS2 motherboard is a writeoff.

Damn, ah well, was already broke before I tried to repair it, now that it's broke more doesn't make much of a difference. Thanks for the help

i agree with rugger - its amazing how many people short out fuses with a piece of wire. the fuses blow for a reason.
