Does playing CD (or CDR) games a lot cause undue strain on the laser and cause it to malfunction sooner (disk read error) as compared to playing DVD (or DVDR) games?

Wondering if it's a bad idea to play old PS1 CD games on the PS2...

There are a few tutorials out there that will instruct you on how to clean your laser and adjust the pots on it, however from my experience it is only a very short term fix. More likely than not, you need a new laser. You can pick them up from sellers here on ps2-scene or on ebay. If you take your ps2 apart the model number of the laser will be on a sticker on the side of the laser. If you have an older ps2 like I do (v4) then your laser is probably a 400b and can be replaced with either a 400b or 400c (the better of the two) laser. If you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask.

No, not to my knowledge. But then again, I could be completely wrong.
