I tend to endorse "brand new"... the newer the better. But if you can still find a V7, so much the better.
You can EASILY buy a "broken" one, with the inevitable "Disc Read Error", if not just that either cd's or dvd's no longer reads right, for about $50, another $50 (or less, 400B's go for around $25, for v 0-4) and I clean them inside and out, with a brand new lazer, that counts as "as good as brand new", for under $100, anyone who asks my opinion of the new, even cheaper ($150, now) 50k, usually agrees that that the same is a deal for a mint version 4-7, especially if they're into the "swap trick" that Sony has invested so much in r&d to prevent them from doing with newer consoles .... they make money selling you games, and despise freeloaders.
Wanna buy one? I have 3 version 1's, with the auto-adjusting azimuth "cog", (switch connector has 7 wires and plugs at the ends, no RIBBONS...ect) all with brand new lazers, used long enough to tune them up for best reading performance, but never actually played, or even run for more than 20 minutes... got 3 version 4's and a version 7, all got the same treatment.
Interesting note: versions 1-3 weigh feelably more (about 3 pounds) than 8 screw models do, and the 10k weighs more than those do.
