best hd to purchase
Hello im a noob and i have a question, i would like to get the largest ide hd to install into my ps2, the compatability list i have found seems to be out dated so i am here. I have read that the network only reads at 32b so it only recognizes up to 120+g so any more is a waste. but then i also read the most of the new software and apps used now in these soft mods are updated to use 64b on the network and therefore change the hd capacity and capabilities wouldnt it. so if i just got my mem card done say today from this forum from say the best guy here to do it and i am shoping for the best hd to use for my hdloader, then what would be recommended. I believe i have a version 9 its a 500001 with a date code of 3b im in us.
the seagate barracuda hard drive would be my ideal choice. my second choice would be with a maxtor hdd. i'm not a big fan WD hard drives and you would have to modify the network adapter to fit one. barracudas hard drives are reliable and durable but the only downside to this hard drive is that it releases a lot of heat.
you can improvise by drilling out a hole pattern identical to the hdd bay cage beneath the PS2 console to allow for extra ventilation.
the current version of HDL 0.8c supports the maximum hdd size up to 1TB. any hdd sizes above 200GB will lag during the HDL start-up splash screen and loading times may be affected as well.
If you can afford a 1TB Barracuda - I think that's the best for you... And if you think that it's going to release lots of heat - than the "Eco" series is your choice (5900rpm, lower power consuption, low heat levels, etc.). But I'm not sure that there are PATA Eco Barracudas... you should check that ;)
No they aren't:)So the best buy will be seagate 1tb(I think it will be very hard to find) or 500gb - both will be 7200rpm
best hd to use
is there a version of these seagates or whatever that are ide and sata capable, my pc is sata only cables no ide, so if this goes south for any reason on the ps2 i have an extra tb on my pc, also i would be able to plug the hd right into my pc for files .
so these size hds 1tb, and 500tb will still fit in the bay huh? the one comment said that it might slow things down, will this effect my game play or dvd playback?
im looking for optimal, i always try to do things right the first time so the best is what i am looking for.
What pc do You have that it is without ide port. You can always use sata-ide converter to hook it to pc. PS2 will only work(without problem) with P(ATA) HDD.Running game from hdd will increase reading speed from HDD(it is much faster than from CD/DVD)
hp pavilion a 6000n
amd athalon 64x2 dual core 4200+ 2.2ghz
1024mb system mem
250gb internal / 1tb external hd
you could also use a SATA-USB enclosure to connect to pc(I use an IDE-USB enclosure for my 250 gig western Digital since its IDE, ahd to mod my network adapter though).
About reading speed: You Will indeed have some lag when starting hdloader(i guess it depends on how big your hd is and how full it is), but it should be bearable(i get about 20s lag on my hd, but its almost completely full). gameplay speed is not affected, and load times decrease significantly compared to playing on cd/dvd. OH, and playing via hdd does not affect dvd playback since you are not using the dvd drive at all
i have a wd my book external 1tb usb, can i use that, i have it on pc as my game data base, and i play off there, all my games rock every one, even batman arkam asylum, bioshock 2, resident evil 5, modern warfare 2, dark void, they all take a sec to load but once running i cant tell they on an external, i get no glitches
so can i just plug and play with this unit, i thought the usb connection on the ps2 was slow, how would i hook this through the hd port, in there an adapter ex. ide female cable to usb female end?
YOU wouldnt be using the network adapter, you would have to use the USB port on the ps2 and openps2loader to load the games from the hd. Although the USB port in the ps2 is 1.1, from what i have read loading time is the same as playing from dvd, check the open ps2loader thread for info on how to set up.
