Someone told me they read in the instruction manual that it's BAD to turn it off all of the time..

BUT..what about for someone with a modded console? I've always read here that it's bad to have those extra volts that leave the system in standby going through the console if you have a modchip.

I don't want my DMS chip to die, but I also don't want my PS2 to die. So which is the way to go..switch off or on?

I've left my console on standby for years, I never use the switch to turn it off. And my chip is working great.
I'm not electrician but I've heard that when you switch on and off a computer using the switch, some upper voltage can go thru the circuits. And that is bad.

    Any more different advices ?

If you really want the system to last longer leave it on all the time.

I've got a V7 (Exploit mod), and have always just left it in standby. Only time I'd ever actually flip the switch is if there's an electrical storm, but even for that I unplug it from the mains.

Me personally, I'm pretty sure it shouldn't hurt the system if you use the switch, just as long as the system's in standby mode already. If it's not in standby when you flip the switch, the system could still be reading the hdd (if you have one installed), or trying to access the cd/dvd, and end up screwing up the disk, the laser, or the laser drive motors.

But then again, that's just my personal opinion.
    Model: NTSC SCPH-39001/R (think it's a v7)
    Mod: PS1 Exploit Softmod
    Harddrive: Internal 40GB Seagate ST340810A
External drive: Apple iPod (in Disk Mode)

err, if u put it on stanby there will be a few electric current flowing, that make your electricity bill a little bit more expensive

if u turn off the PS2, it will completly off, so there will be no electric current flowing to ur PS2, this make the components "rest", but will make the BIOS battery "work". so ur batt will empty faster.

in my slim PS2, when i unplug it for 2 weeks, the date and time setting is gone

By turning it off with the back switch all the risk you get is to turn it off while it's writing to the HDD (mostly with official HDD only games such as Final Fantasy XI) or while copying data or even while it's saving to the MC which will probably cause a blue box with a nifty "corrupted data" title in it. (Sometimes corrupted data is undeletable so avoid it. Such a situation would require a MC format or a advanced tool like uLAUNCHELF to have it fixed.)

I don't think that the power used to keep the led alive matter. I think that it's almost equal to zero. If you would keep only a stand by ps2, i don't think that the electric meter would even move.
And yeah, i think that there is no problem if you turn off the ps2. I keep it stand by and turn it off only when getting out the hdd to install a game.
