I'm a member of a half-dozen forums, and I always enjoy helping out complete newbies. I hope you guys are the same way.

I'm basically a complete newbie when it comes to modding, but I'm not a technical dolt. I do know how to flash things, I'm just overloaded with information.

What I'd like to do is turn a PS2 into a media center wherein I can stream my movies/music/recorded TV to somewhere the PS2 can be attached on the network. I'm aware I'd need a separate network adapter for the fat one. I've done a small amount of research, but most things are so horribly outdated it just isn't worth the pain. I'd like to do this on the cheap, but if that is not doable, I'll understand. If you can help me even just get homebrew on the fat one, I'll be pleased as punch.

    Here's what I have:

    * Unmodded PS2 Slim (SPCH-770001) This one is my baby, I don't really want to destroy it, but if it has to be it has to be
    * Unmodded PS2 Fat (SPCH-30001) This beast I picked up today for $15 and I'd hope is easier to mod. No network adapter
    * Several blank PS2 memory cards
    * Original Dex Drive (No software for it, but I do have a serial port)
    * Network setup disc for PS2 Slim
    * Codebreaker by Pelican (unsure of what version, though, as it doesn't say anywhere on screen)
    * USB jump drive, 512MB (have larger drives)
    * internet connection
    * burnable CDs, DVDs and burner

Is there anything I can do with what I already have? Is there something in the cheap I can buy to make this happen? Is it a lost cause? Any help (as well as some snark for being a newbie) is appreciated.

Have you read the FMCB and OPL guides linked near the very top of every page in these forums ?

They exist partly because most veterans here have replied to questions like yours several hundred times over, each...

We very much prefer if users read through such guides, and some previous advice on similar issues given to other users in the public forums, before requesting individual guidance from us.

In short I will say that all you stated as your goals can be done, though I'm not absolutely sure if you have all it takes to do it all by yourself. But since you have a fat PS2 and a cheat engine, you should be able to use those to install the old PS1 exploit which the fat console (only) can boot. This is a good way to start uLaunchELF which can then be used to launch the FMCB installer from a USB drive. I believe some of the existing guides deal with similar methods.

To use that method you will need to get hold of at least one original PS1 game disc in reasonably good condition, which your fat PS2 can boot without problems. The ID of that game can then be used to generate the exploit file you will use in booting uLE when the exploit is triggered by the booting of that game (after you've used a cheat generator to transfer the exploit gamesave to your PS2 memory card).

Once you've used the fat console to install FMCB to an MC with the 'Multi Version' method, that MC can also be booted by your slim console, and you can easily use either console booted by FMCB to make more such installations for the other MCs.

And with that said I refer you to the existing FMCB installation guides.

    Best regards: dlanor

To close the thread for newbies like myself, I did eventually get it to work, and without using the PS2 Fat.

I used my copy of Agent Under Fire to save the Driving level stage to my memory card. I then copies AUF onto my desktop, and changed the DRIVING level.

It's laid out here --> PS2 Game Swap Trick

I taped the two sensors and played my backup I created.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXoxAd_Q_P0]YouTube - Mod LaunchELF on your PS2 Slim SPCH-77001 without Codebreaker[/ame] is the result.

From there I was able to install FMCB. Thank you to dlanor for your patience and pointing me in the right direction.
