Another newb with FMCB questions. Already researched.

I know that the last thing most forums need is another newb asking the same questions that have been asked 1000x times so I'll try to be as least obnoxious as possible. I've done hours of research/reading to try and educate myself as much as possible on the matter, but I think I'm experiencing information overload.
What I want is to simply play some .iso backups on my PS2. I originally attempted to order swap-magic and would probably have been happy with that but it seems that it's hard to come across.
Here's what I have:
-Fat PS2 (version 5 from what I can tell)
-Legit network adapter (used it once for it's intended purpose in all the years I've owned it. Nearly shat myself today when I noticed it has an IDE connector on it.)
-Syphon Filter- The omega strain (reported to be compatible by using the netgui.elf file)
-Hard drive (not sure of the size or brand as I'm going to rip it out of an old Tivo, once I actually find it).
-I might have a PS1 game laying around somewhere if needed for the exploit, but I'd have to look really hard for it.
The only thing I think I need is an extra memory card.
So I should be good to go right? I'll give the disc-swap exploit one, maybe 2 tries and if it doesn't work I'm going to use one of the FMCB installers here. No sense in wasting time. If I have a PS1 disc I don't need to worry about using a exploitable game (007 and such), right?
My questions are this:
-Once FMCB are installed on my MC (and the other apps that the newb pack comes with) will I have no trouble using my backup discs?
-Does it matter which slot my FMCB MC is in? I'd rather keep my regular card with all it's saved games virgin and in memory slot #1, keeping the FMCB one in memory slot #2 if possible.
Thanks for the help everyone. Didn't realize this would be so confusing.

Your backup discs (assuming you have some at the moment) will be worthless, you will need to patch each iso image with a special patching program before you burn them to disc (for use with ESR)
Even after patching, not all games work with ESR, it's just a matter of testing and seeing if they work or not.

I'm not too sure, i don't think it makes much of a difference.

Aaah thanks. So I'll need to re-rip my originals and apply the patch to them. Okay that's easy enough.

That's exactly what i do and it works fine.

You can run those games from HDD.
Just include HDLODER.ELF in BOOT folder(i thinks its allready included in the package).
To install games to an ide HDD just conectit no matter how to your pc/laptop.
Open WinHiip , format that drive(becarefull to select the correct drive, ussually first one its pc hdd) and after that go to ADD IMAGE option, seach for a DVD drive or an ISO and START. After 20/25 minutes its done from an usb/ide adapter.
To check this go to your PS2 and conect HDD to NETWORK ADAPTER.Connect it firmly not super-tight(youll kill the screws)
Turn ON and select HDLOADER from MENU.
Thats all.
Sorry for my english,i speak spanish.

You could try cogswap to play your old backups (basicly a swap magic clone), but reripping and patching them with esr works if you plan on playing from a disc

HDloader is outdated, Open PS2 Loader is much better and supports usb and SMB aswell as internal hdd. but everything else is done the same.

Get the new newbie package, it has OPL and is better than HDLoader for most games. you may want to keep a copy of HDLoader on the MC in case some of your games do not work with OPL( very few) . i recomend FMCB in slot 2 as 90%+ of games automatically save to slot 1. i use a 16 Mb card in slot 1 and FMCB ona 8Mb in slot 2. FMCB uses around 2.3 Mb with the newbie package. plenty of room left for emulators etc..
most HDD will fit directly to the Network adaptor EXCEPT western digital. WD HDD's have a larger space between the IDE connector and the power connector. a quick mod to the NA will allow them to fit.... if you are willing to try.
for the sake of a few bucks in postage i dont think it is worth damaging your PS2 trying to disk swap. besides by the time you get the right disk and all the other stuff needed to do it yourself , one of the installers will have done it and returned your card to you... guaranteed to work too.....

Thanks for the info. I wasn't going to try and cobble together a tool the force-eject the disc, rather I was going to take the lid off and do it that way (only gotta do it one time right?) But I'll still probably send the card out. Not worth the hassle. I managed to find that old tivo, and inside I found a Maxtor 40GB hard drive that's on the compatibility list. 40GB isn't huge but it's not too bad either. I don't need (nor have) 100's of games.
As far as adding games in the future, rather than having to pull the drive out I was going to either have the PS2 itself rip them to disc (you can do that right?), or use a crossover cable connected to my laptop and use networking to copy them over (what app does that again?). I know both of those methods would be slow but I'm not too concerned about that. I'll make myself a sandwich or something.
This is exciting!

hdl_dump_gui-2.1
hdl_dump_helper_gui_2.2 I recommend this myself
hdl_dumx-0.8.6
hdldumpguiv15

V10 SCPH-50001 with Network adapter SCPH-10281 500 G HD
PSP 3000 9G 6.20 PRO CFW Perm
