Has there been any research or attempts to use and external or alternate CD/DVD drive in the PS2?
I understand the Driver issue, but an modchip could be utilized for this as well.
If there is any info on this, I would be curious to read up on it.

it isnt just the driver issue, the drive in the ps2 isn't ide, so most of the electronics (aside from the laser and motors) are on the motherboard. you can replace the drive with a drive from another ps2, but it's not like you can just buy a dvdrom at the local computer store and expect it to work.
you can connect an IDE device via the network adapter
It may also be possible to gut the transport from a PC DVD drive, at least one that has similar components. I'm pretty sure sony wouldn't make a laser head just for the PS2, and more than likely use it in their DVD-ROM drives as well. (not proven...just an idea)
Some of the other stuff--the worm gear motor and spindle motor should be pretty common (and similar) between different drives, but IMHO dont usually just die.
