Do I need a Classic Controller to play Super Mario Bros. 3 on my Wii?

I bought Super Mario Bros. 3 from the wii shop onto my wii and loaded it up and it just comes up with a black screen and none of the buttons work for it besides the home button. Is it because I need a classic controller? I have no idea.

You should be getting a splash screen telling you that the classic controller is needed ( I believe you can also get by with a GC controller)

this title plays with the wii remote only.

Sounds like its trying to load an ios that isn't present. ?My best advice is find modmii and use it to update your system and all the ios manually. if the wii is nopt modded then update to the latest system menu and report back. If for example you updated to 4.3 by an unoficial updater its possible you are missing some important files. if you updated by the official means then thats not the case. Bassically I need more information. what software version are you running and how did you get there and are you modded?
