Voices cutting short in backups - 3.55kmeaw/multiman/rogero/gaia –
02-14-2011,11:51 PM
Firmware: 3.55kmeaw
Hard disk: Both internal/external
PS3: 40gig & 80gig tested
Managers: multiman 1.15.05, Rogero 8.0, Gaia 2.07
Games: Rdr undead nightmare, assassin's creed brotherhood, prototype, infamous, some others I can't remember.
I don't know if this is just a symptom of having the game played from hard drives (happens on both internal and external), and I don't know whether it is caused from the brand of drive (wd, toshiba) but they all exhibit same behaviour. Ocassionally when there are characters on screen talking sometimes they are cut off mid-sentence or the end of their sentence is chopped off as if someone skipped it (this tends to usually happen with character extras talking in the background passing the main character). This doesn't always happen, but it happens often enough for me to notice. I also see many pop-ins happening (graphics) like extra characters etc and stuff loading so maybe it's just the way it is caching things. Does anyone else experience this? It's not really ruining my gaming experience or anything but I just want to know if anyone has come across it or knows what is causing it as I haven't really seen anyone talk or make a post about this. Any input is appreciated.
Note: The 40gig ps3 is using a 250.0GB Western Digital "Scorpio" 5400RPM WD 2500BEV (both external/internal)
The toshiba drive (in the 80gig ps3) is the stock one that came with it from the mgs4 bundle.
I did think I read somewhere about issues with the scorpio's, however I think it was more with the 500gig ones, and when I play via discs (normal and not from backups) I do not experience any of this. Maybe it's because it's loading faster than normal? It's possible that it happens more with games that stream audio/etc from disk.

Hm, an example for instance would be like in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Walking around past a crowd of people where you can usually hear idle chatter or someone commenting - sometimes the last syllable or like less than half a second off the speech is cut off. You will see that it is more obvious if you are running past them quickly (maybe this has more to do with their sound cutoff coding in-game and it is tailored more to bd-rom speed rather than hd speed?). I notice that this occurs alot with games that stream from disk but that isn't always the case as I have noticed it with games that also install gamedata to hd.

Killzone 3 is also showing symptoms of this problem. I'd like to say it was the hd I was using but it happens on the other ps3 using stock hd too.
Update: my bad, it seems that the one section in Killzone 3 appears to be an anomaly with their own recording, however I still stand with my statement about voices cutting off in those other games. I watched a video on youtube at the same part where I heard the voice cutoff and it was also the same as I had.

yes, you are not alone. I have noticed slowdowns, voice problems... from internal in fifa 11 and mass effect 2 were voices goes off sometimes.. in fifa 11 sometimes slowdown (it didnt happen to me in 3.41 ps3key)... and yes, i changed my internal for a 500 gb WD and playing both games from there.

Thanks for the info, it's definitely not my imagination then. Good point to note that it didn't occur when you were on 3.41, maybe there is something in the payload or managers that can be done to make it play back to normal again like it used to, then again it could also be partly an hd issue. Anyone else that is *not* on a WD brand drive and experiencing this? I do know the 80gig I have with stock hd it came with does this too (came with a toshiba from 80gig mgs4 bundle).
