Dean, thanks for the input on this. Only now do I realise exactly what's going on with 'shadow copy'. And of course, now that it is explained properly it makes perfect sense.
A$h x, this is great info and I think this is an interesting topic and definitely worth more investigation. I'm not really short of disk-space myself yet, but I just don't like the idea of unnecessary duplication eating up that space, and I'm sure this info will be useful to many.
I've posted on the other thread I started (linked above) that I'm coming here to this thread instead. I'll try to post back any further findings as and when I get to them, (which won't happen very fast I'm afraid). As you can see from my post in the other thread about the Operation Flashpoint games, there is some totally unnecessary duplication going on. This just got me thinking exactly the same as you.
Cheers

I've found some titles that require shadow copy enabled specifically to allow the installation of game data, but after that run perfectly fine without it.

What do you mean? all games will use normal copy to copy files from USRDIR or wherever to the game folder. Once they are shadow copied, then they stay shadow copied unless i misunderstood you.
I've been trying to get medal of honor to work with shadow copy, but it ALWAYS hangs on "checking existing installation". Always on different percentages as well. I have to pull the power to the PS3 to get it to reboot, and then medal of honor will go through checking the install, and then re-install again. Weird because it's identical data from the cookedps3 folder. I guess it must preform a check each time it starts for the data integrity or timestamp or something.
Same goes for RE5 gold edition, the source is the same size, but it throws up a "corrupt install data" message.

I know it's an old thread, but I wanted to ask if this method works if the game is on my External HDD and I try to do a shadow copy to the Internal HDD and delete the original game data?
Cause I never really understood it completely.

No, shadow-copy (shortcuts) works only for internal HDD.
