I am testing out the PSX display mode for myself, but it does not seem to be working. All the options for NTSC (since thats my region) look identical. Note I tested with both 3D Polygonal games and 2D sprite games.

Do I have to be running the game off the internal hard drive instead of the disc? Now I did not expect it to turn FF VII into Uncharted, but I expected someone along the lines of a Bleemcast! upscale.

Choosing a higher display mode just means that the console is resizing the image rather than your AVR / TV - depending on your setup it may look better, worse or the same. The internal resolution is the same and the render path remains unchanged unlike Bleemcast and PC emulators which may render the game at a higher resolution internally or implement anti-aliasing or texture filtering.
