Just to confirm about latest 4.46 CFW and MultiMan update. –
Sorry, I'm a bit new to the PS3 scene, and my PS3 came with CFW (Rogero) and MultiMan already installed. However, I'm not a total n00b when it comes to technical stuff, so you don't have to spell out every little basic detail for me. =P
Anyway, there's several files listed for download for the new version of MultiMan. I just want to confirm that I only need to install the first one? I do already have an existing version of MultiMan (running with Rogero 4.41) on my PS3 if that makes a difference.
I'm just not sure what all this is with the other files on there.
(EDIT: CRAP, I thought I had clicked into the MultiMan forum. Obviously not. Sorry about posting this in the general one, feel free to move it.)
Well, with me being an impatient little ****, I decided to just go ahead and assume that *was* the case (albeit doing the MultiMan update before the firmware update).
Indeed, it works fine with just that one. So there's the answer to anyone else wondering the same thing. =)
Hm. Out of interest, how bad are the chances of a ban with using the normal MultiMan vs the stealth one? (I'm sure I can manage the more difficult setup) I have played online a couple of times running a game from standard, and haven't run into trouble yet, but it might be worth switching... online play isn't critical to me, but no reason to screw it up if it's possible not to.
Thanks for the detailed explanation, by the way.
Okay, I'm having no luck getting this to work. I used method 2 (renaming the report_data to a self file, running it through MultiMan), method 1 isn't possible as the installpkg file it refers to isn't in the archive (I even tried downloading an older version, as presumably that's just an installer so it doesn't matter if it's from the latest version or not - at any rate I figured it was at least worth trying, but the old archive is missing that file too)*. When I run it, it does enter into another instance of MultiMan (which notably, in addition to my normal games in the list, also shows a copy of MultiMan in there), but there's no change on my XMB and I can't get into MultiMan in any way, apart from the usual way of the non-stealth version's icon. The app_home thing is exactly as it always is, and if I go into install packages (which was always there for me) then press (whether a short press or press and hold) select, nothing happens. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? If it matters I'm running that new 4.46 CFW, and I have no homebrew of any kind installed other than MultiMan itself (including nothing like the PS2 Classics emulator).
* Downloading the large "everything" pack as we speak, in case that one's not so lacking of essential files. EDIT: Nope, it's just as absent.
EDIT: Well I managed to track down the file, but no difference using this method - it launches fine immediately after the install, but no changes to app_home and can't launch stealth MultiMan in any way. So I guess I'm waiting on advice from someone who has an idea of what to do.
If it matters, my PS3 is a phat, originally 80GB (but now 320GB), non-BC.
EDIT again: Also, worst case scenario... I've heard (but not looked into in much detail - I generally don't with these things until I actually need them, since I learn best by doing) there's ways to bypass bans?
In the meantime, I'm making sure the PS3's internet is turned off whenver I'm not actually using online or LAN features. I realise that won't offer perfect protection (unless this new firmware has unpublicized cloaking features or something), but it can't hurt - especially if they run a detection script once in a while rather than constantly collecting data, which I assume they'd be doing since it'd be pretty dodgy for them to be constantly spying, and it's Sony we're talking about here, not Microsoft.
EDIT YET AGAIN: Upon looking around, it appears I'm not the only one with this problem, though it appears somewhat rare and I can't track down any solution. Any ideas? If there isn't a known one, since I have a problematic PS3 I'm happy to assist an expert in trying to find one.

I just had a thought that it could be something to do with the prior custom firmware (although it shouldn't be). I'm going to try putting it back to 3.55 OFW, then doing a straight install of this 4.46 CFW and see if that works any better.
A direct downgrade to 3.55 OFW using any known method didn't work (it said the PUP file was corrupted - even though I tried two different downloads, both of which passed an MD5 verification (which should mean a second download would make no difference, but I tried just in case anyway - it can't hurt after all)). I used Rogero's downgrader to downgrade to 3.55 CFW then try going to OFW from that; same result. So I'm going to try going from that directly back to the 4.46 CFW - worst case scenario, I'm back where I started, nothing lost. It seems I have some kind of rare model that likes to be a pain in the ass. >_>
Okay what the f***. It won't let me install 4.46 CFW now either. Apart from reinstalling the downgrader, it won't accept ANY firmware install now. >_> What the **** do I do to fix this?
EDIT: Shit, managed to almost fully brick the thing... fortunately, I managed to get it back out. But I'm still stuck on downgrade. Oh well, if I can overcome that, I'm sure I'll be fine with just about anything... I'll keep trying to find a solution on my own, but any advice is still much appreciated!
.... I AM A F***ING IDIOT. I completely missed a step in the downgrade process (specifically, after the Downgrader, installing the proper Rogero CEX 3.55 firmware). >_> Alright, let's do this...
EDIT: Nope. No luck. Apart from reinstalling Rogero's 9.99 over itself, or installing Rebug's 9.99 over it (which in turn, I can still only install those two over), nothing's working. >_> I'm trying both from System Update and from Recovery Mode, with all possible combinations of Rogero vs Rebug, QA on/off, and system update debug on/off. If it matters by the way, my console's exact model number is CECHJ02 and the minimum firmware checker reports the minimum version as 2.16.
EDIT AGAIN: Actually, with this topic being in MultiMan forum it's probably not the best place to get an answer for this. Don't answer here; I'll create a new topic in a more relevant section in a minute.
EDIT: I got carried away with trying more stuff on my own before I created the topic. Including Factory Service Mode dehash, which is what bricked the system before under Rogero's 9.99, but it looks like it's working under Rebug's. =D Using the official 3.55 for it. Will update again once we see how it goes - I managed to recover it before (albeit back to where it was prior to trying - stuck with only the two 9.99s), so worst case scenario, I should be able to again, but this time, the lights are flashing to indicate it's working. =D
FINAL EDIT: Well, it didn't turn off to indicate it was completed (I waited over an hour before deciding "**** this, it's probably crashed" and turning the PS3 off), and the log file showed errors. "Oh f***ing great" I thought to myself. But nope - rebooted my PS3 and not only does it start up in a very clearly not bricked state, it's now running OFW 3.55 - which was my goal all along with all this s***! My first step was (due to errors in the log file) attempt a reinstall of 3.55 via more conventional methods, which worked flawlessly! From there, I reinstalled CFW 4.46 and MultiMan. But unfortunately, still no luck with stealth MultiMan. (Yes, I am attempting the new 4.46-compatible version.) I'll create a new topic about this, this one's too clogged - could a mod or admin close it please?
