how can i play mp4 files from a Hdd on my ps3? –
I have some mp4 file on a Hdd. i wanna play them from Hdd on ps3. How can i do this? If i cant do this how can i burn them to dvd?
also i tried hooking the Hdd up to the ps3 and it didnt recognize it. I forgot what does it have to formated as? ntfs or fat?
This is very similar to you other post. I usually remove duplicate threads, but will not do so here.
In order for your PS3 to recognize an external hard drive, it must be formatted to FAT32. What is the hard drive's format?
The USB drive needs to be formatted as FAT32. Once formatted (or converted using a tool like Paragon Partition Manager - most free ones can't convert) then make a folder at the root called \VIDEO (case is important). Put your avi and mp4 files there.
In the long run you'll be better off using showtime to play your videos. It'll let you play mkv files too which the native PS3 video player can't play. Look at the front page and you should see it
Just for future reference it is very bad forum etiquette to post your question multiple times in separate threads. Look on the front page on the right side and you'll see how your question gets listed twice. It just makes for clutter on the boards and then one of the mods has to take time to clean it up
I'm not sure OP has a modified system.

Assuming he's on CFW since he's posting in a homebrew section then Showtime is the way to go. If he's on stock then the instructions I listed are valid for setting up a usb drive and playing his videos. He'd just be limited to AVI (DIVX and XVID) and MP4 formats and wouldn't be able to play the higher quality MKV files

On the 300g i have my workout dvd mp4 files on there. P90x/imnsanity etc. I want to plug that usb into the ps3 and play it from there and save dvds. I forgot what i had to forma the ext dvd to. I think this cause when i hooked up the 300 gig the ps3 didnt read it in showrtime?
thanks for quick reply
These MP4s are the Audio or Video. As *.mp4 could really be both. If they're Video Files, try renaming then *.m4v instead that should flag it as a Video File then. With some luck it might even play in the stock player. It should how ever play fine in Showtime then.

The NTFS mode in Multiman is strictly for copying a backup from a NTFS formatted external to the PS3 internal.

any idea how i can play them in showtime?
If you are on Windows 7 you can easily see what file system (format) your external drive is. Simply hook it up to your computer and go to Start->My Computer and click (don't double click and explore the drive) on the drive icon. At the bottom of the window there should be text like 'File syste: XXXXXXX'. If you are on another version of Windows, you can get the same information by right clicking on the drive icon and selecting 'Properties'.
