Help Using Singstar PS2 Backups With New 4.19.05 MultiMan –
02-09-2013,02:49 PM
I haven't really messed around with my PS3 in a long, long time. It has remained on 3.55CFW for years now mostly untouched in the hopes that I would be able to do more with Singstar with it someday. Much to my surprise, I saw the newest version of Multiman supported swapping in a PS2 backup at the disc swap. Words could not express how excited I was last night.
Many hours later and I've got nothing. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I have it setup to properly load PS3 Singstar backups including one I made myself (Singstar Chart Hits (Australian)) and a copy of Back to the 80's (EU) I downloaded ages ago while waiting for my copy to arrive. In the directory for Back to the 80s I have a folder called [PS2 80S] containing a selfmade backup iso of the US version of Singstar 80s.
I inserted Singstar Dance (US) as my PS3 disc, though I do understand it can be any PS3 game. In Multiman I chose Back to the 80s and then my [PS2 80S] folder on the pop up. The game starts, and I go to swap disc. I eject my PS3 disc and insert a PS2 disc, the US version of Eyetoy Play. Singstar greets me with a warning that this is not a Singstar disc. Even inserting the Singstar 80s disc greets me with that message, so I'm assuming I've done something wrong with the iso file.
If anyone could help me, it'd be much appreciated. I have more questions/feature suggestions if Dean happens to come across this. I've longed to be able to make my own custom PS3 Singstars or combine them into one or load all my backups onto the HDD and swap at will and this is the closest thing yet.

I think you still need a real PS2 disc too, not just a real PS3 one.
Eyetoy Play is a real disc. I also tried it with the actual Singstar 80s Ps2 disc. (Not the same as Back to the 80s)
I have the same problem with Multiman and I'm using the same original disc which works in Iris for the same function. I'm not sure what the issue is as the instructions are straight forward for Multiman. I get the popup menu to choose your PS2 Singstar game but I always get the same message (this is not a Singstar disc) after the in-game swap. I even tried actual PS2 Singstar originals and not just any original PS2 game just to see if it made a difference, but it didn't. I have this function working perfect in Iris Manager, I just can't fathom what the problem is with Multiman.

It works properly in Iris? I was going to mess with Iris but it seems like such a hassle. So sloppy looking, and don't you have to make a custom txt to link your PS2 discs? If you say it works then I guess I know what my next few hours will consist of here...

Yes, works fine in Iris. I have moved all my Singstar games to /dev_usb000/GAMEZ and use Iris for these so I can use the PS2 song function, although I would like to get it working in Multiman as I like the popup menu Deank has added.
Instructions for Iris PS2 Singstar function:
Drag the contents of any PS2 Singstar disc into a folder and put it on your Internal or USB drive.
In 'ps2disc.txt' write the path to the Singstar PS2 game you've just extracted, eg. My link to Singstar Ballads looks like this: "/dev_usb/SINGSTAR_PS2_DISCS/SINGSTAR_BALLADS" (without the quotes). Note: Make sure you write '/dev_usb' and not '/dev_usb000' in your link in the ps2disc.txt otherwise you will get the same "not a Singstar disc" message you have been getting in Multiman. I have attached my ps2disc.txt as a working example.
Copy the ps2disc.txt into the directory of the PS3 Singstar game you are going to boot (ps2disc.txt must be in the same directory as PS3_DISC_SFB).
Boot any PS3 Singstar game from Iris. (Just use default options, no need to change anything in the config menu.)
When the game has booted, at the song selection screen, press 'select' and it will ask you to insert another Singstar Disc.
Now insert any Original PS2 game (don't use a backup, it won't work). It will now begin to load up the tracks from the PS2 Singstar Disc where 'ps2disc.txt' is pointing to.
If you want to reload the tracks of the PS3 Singstar game you originally booted, press 'select' on the song selection screen, remove the PS2 disc, and insert any Original PS3 game.

Thank you so much!!! I have good news and bad, though I might just be SOL.
I have a US PS3, I loaded the AU Singstar Chart Hits, I got it to load the songs from the ES (PAL) Singstar Summer Party. The game sees the songs, it sees the album art. No preview audio/video and it goes to black screen and freezes when I choose anything.
The 80s US backup works though. Generally speaking you can't insert a foreign PS2 Singstar disc to swap with, but since it recognized it and loaded the songs, I'm confused as to why it locks up. Does it have to do with the video signal? I have another TV downstairs that plays nice with 576i/PAL if that's what I need to do.
Actually I got MM to work now that my 80S disc was extracted and not an ISO. I will edit this post with details of the testing of my PAL discs later.
12:41AM EST 2/10/13: My Summer Party disc still kills it, but my PAL Anthems disc works flawlessly. I'll have to seek out a different copy of Summer Party. I'd import the discs if I could swap them, but with this method at the moment there are just two songs I'm trying to play off two different discs.
5:15PM 2/10: Tried a German copy of Summer Party and it worked fine. Everything works fine.
What would be awesome is if you could have it set up so that you swap to one PS2 backup, then the next swap is another one in a list, then the next goes to another and so on. Lightyears away from what I really want, but would still be cool.
I doubt this message will reach the right people, but one relative question. Now that this works, is it possible to hack a Singstar PS2 disk to combine multiple discs of songs?
Here's my last self-bump, I figured this is important enough to stand on its own post in case any other troubled users come across this thread.
Here's the one way I've found to get this to work every single time.
1. Boot PS3 with external drive attached (if that's where your games are) and no game in the drive.
2. Load Multiman, choose your PS3 Singstar and then PS2 Singstar in the popup box. (Your PS2 Singstar can not contain the .iso file, it has to contain the contents of the disc.)
3. As usual you're sent back to the XMB to choose your game. Now is when you insert your PS3 disc and let it automatically load.
4. Proceed to the song choice wheel, hit select (I think?) to change discs, and pop in your PS2 backup.
It's also worth mentioning that the older PS3 Singstars didn't support this feature out of the box and required a patch. The first patch was for PS3 swaps and then a future one was for PS2 swaps. My Singstar Chart Hits is new enough that it supports it, and I know Back to the 80s does as well. The latest patch you can download won't run on 3.55CFW but maybe you know how to make that work better than I do. Enjoy!
