Copying games to the HD
Copying games to the HD –
05-25-2011,01:00 PM
Hi
Im having a problem transferring some games to the internal HD from my external. (Like LA Noire and Virtua Tennis 4). Basically it starts transferring and then will freeze. I tried tranferring through FTP and had the same problem, and I eve tried transfering God of War 3 from disc and had no luck.
Some games have worked perfectly, which is why in struggling to understand. Its like it just won't transfer certain files.
Im on 3.55 kmeaw and and using the lastest MultiMAN. I have a phat PS3, originally 60gb but i've upgraded it to a WD 320Gb Scorpio Blue.
Sorry if i've posted in the wrong place, I'm really new to all of this. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help?

When using FTP, which client/FTP server/how many threads are you using? When copying locally to your internal, which backup manager are you using? Have you tried running the fixpermissions.pkg on your PS3 since swapping your HDD? Have you tried any of the file system rebuild options in the recovery menu?

I use Filezilla client, and only use 1 thread. I'm using MultiMAN to backup the games. Never heard of the fixpermissions.pkg or the file system rebuilds, like I said i'm really new to this. What do you think would be the best place to start?

I'd try fixpermissions.pkg. You should be able to find it in the link in my sig (yes, I know tthousand, I need to update it, I'll get to it soon
). Just download and install it and then run it. It won't show you that it's doing anything, just dump back to the XMB when it's done. Another thing that happened to me, and you can try to switch around and see if it fixes your problem too, is if your GAMES folder is anywhere other then /dev_hdd0/GAMES then change it to that. Example: Your current games folder is /dev_hdd0/GAMEZ you'd want to create a folder /dev_hdd0/GAMES and move everything from GAMEZ to GAMES. Something funny about MM fixing permissions in one folder and not the other. If both of those don't work, do a Google search for PS3 Recovery Menu to get a list of the options and their meaning and run both of the options for file system recovery. You might have a bad block that's preventing the copy process from finishing.

Tried fixpermissions.pkg, had no luck. My games are already in the GAMES folder. I've put it into Restore File System, completed but then started again, and is now stil going. It has been going now for almost an hour and a half and is only at 10%. :S Is it meant to take that long or is something going wring?
Really not having a lot of luck with this console. Thanks a lot for your help

The bigger the HDD, the longer the restore file system option can take. It's essentially a check disk application that's checking for bad blocks, etc. I've heard for some people it can take upwards of 4-5 hours. I'd just let it do it's thing, otherwise it might get more corrupted and you'll have to reformat. Worse case scenario, would it be the end of the world if you had to format this drive and put it in again? I'm guessing you backed up/restored your old HDD to this new one? If so, some permissions could have been screwed up and it might be best just to start from a clean point.

Ok, so the restore file system thing never worked, it never got past 10% and i left it for hours on end. Im going to format the HDD, I only just got the PS3 so I haven't got anything on there that i'm very bothered about yet anyway.
Now when I turn the PS3 on, it stright away says the HDD is corrupt, and won't ever get to the XMB. I'm guessing I have to put it into recovery mode and choose to restore the PS3 right?

Yes, at this point I see no other option.

Ok, got it sorted now.... kind of. I tried to restore the HDD but it literally took over 24 hours and did nothing, so I gave up and put my original 60gb HDD back in. Now eveything is working great, and i'm able to transfer all my games perfectly. Think i'm just going to accept that the HDD was knackard and prob buy a new one. If anyone has any suggestions on a good SATA 2.5 HDD im all ears. I would be happy with 250gb
Thanks for all your help with this, its really appreciated. Im glad to be able to play LA Noire finally!
