Region Settings... Pretty curious about this option

Hello.
So, I'm not a REBUG user, however I've been looking for a way to permanently change the region of a PS3 (for example, PAL to NTSC).
I've been messing with the Region Settings option, and it looks pretty promising. My console is a PAL console. I've tried North America and Hong Kong settings.
Seems to work very well so far. It changed the lowest resolution from 720x576 50Hz (PAL) to 720x480 60Hz (NTSC). The Hong Kong option also switched the X and O buttons like the Asian models are. However, Recovery Mode and System Update mode are still 720x576 50Hz.
However... I tried flashing a non-REBUG firmware with the region setting set to NA, and after installing, XMB is still in 720x480!

So it does look like this option has the power to (almost) completely and permanently change the region of your PS3. What I'm wondering now is, would it make it accept NTSC PS1 and PS2 discs instead of PAL ones, with either REBUG CFW or with flashing a non-REBUG fw later? This is what I'm after.

I wonder if i can play PAL movie DVD-s and Blurays on my NTSC console with this setting enabled

I ever try messing with it once and it mess up my whole system have to enter recovery mode to fix everything.

So my advice is don't mess with it. Just my 2 cents ;)

Well I already messed with it :P And seems to work so far. The worst thing that happened is that I would get no video after setting the area to Hong Kong, because it then asked if I wanted to use HDMI and i pressed X, but Hong Kong models use O as enter and X as back so I would end up getting no video LOL
Hmm... didn't think about DVD/Blu-ray... Gonna try with one later.

It works for DVD , changed my region to Europe , popped a PAL DVD and it worked . I don't know about blu-ray though

Just checked, and you're right. Put a PAL DVD after changing region to North America and I got this message :

Note that I'm curently NOT in REBUG firmware. Which means you can permanently change the region of your PS3 if you want to :)
I believe it's safe to assume that it works with DVD, Blu-ray, PS1 and PS2 games.
