The PS2 is still quite a money spinner for sony, it was only JUST released in Brazil last year. Sony probibly has the dev backing to make a full soft PS2 emulator but won't.
Why don't they? it seems stupid in their logic not to. Make a full Soft-Emu, throw it in an update i.e. 3.70. Tonnes of people will update, and surely that'll kill a few brewers. Not like im on sony's side or anything. I'm rocking 3.41 and an E3.
+1 Covarr: neat explanation.
I think we can forget any chance of Sony ever bringing back PS2 compatibility to the PS3.
The simple fact is that the PS2 remains one of the moneymakers for Sony even TODAY.
Some PS2 users have reported their SCPH-900xx consoles having 'datecodes' like 1A, meaning that those particular consoles were assembled during the first quarter of 2011. And an even more astonishing fact is that an entirely new type of PS2 console, built into a TV set, was recently introduced in some markets (definitely in Britain). This PS2 variant has bios 2.50, which is even newer than that in the SCPH-900xx series, and must have been developed sometime during 2010 (as the TV was apparently released in late 2010).
Everyone who has considered the PS2 a 'dead product' just because the PS3 is out had better think again, because Sony certainly don't think so, and there are plenty of customers who agree. And one big reason for that is the enormous supply of good games for the PS2, most of which will never be 'converted' to PS3 versions.
And while those customers remain willing to pay for real PS2 hardware Sony is not likely to give away the ability to run PS2 games on existing PS3 consoles.
So if we are ever going to have universal PS2 compatibility for all PS3 consoles, then we are going to have to do it ourselves, by either creating a brand new emulator for it or porting one from another platform. At present the most promising prospect would seem to be the PCSX branch of the mednafen project, but I think that good results for a PS2 emulator may require a project dedicated to emulating just that single platform.
