The ps2 bios already exist within the ps3 that can't play ps2 games. They don't work cuz there is no GS chip installed onto the motherboard.
add more info if im missing something
I don't get it.
Everybody says, only the Ps3's with the right hardware can play ps2 games.
But the "PAL CECHC" PS3 and the "NTSC CECHE" have an software based ps2 emulator.
So why it's impossible to use it on every ps3 if we find out how to do?
Sry for my bad english ;)
Erm,... Those with Software-Emulation only emulate either EE, or GS not both or am I wrong?
The US/JP launch model has both the EE and GS, later models with emulation - such as the PAL launch - still have the GS. Then Sony removed even that.. and lost all PS2 support in total.
so pcsx2 can do to a laptop what sony cant do with the ps3?
PS2 games should be able to run full speed on Cell/BE, the reason Sony both removed B/C support and never wrote the code to emulate it completely in software is because the PS2 console was at the time still a good money-maker for them. Why give away something for free when you can charge for it, right?
now would be a very good time to put back PS2 emulation support if they want to gain back some score with customers (besides the obvious OtherOS support)
I was under the impression that Sony removed PS2 compatability due to the excessive cost it was to produce it. Sony did actually lose millions during the first year or so of making the PS3, each PS3 costed about $700 to make and sold for only $500 or so. That's why the Slim had pretty much every conceivable feature removed from it that they could find.
(Less USB ports, no PS2 compatability, no SD or any card readers, no SACD support, no Linux.) Admittedly the last 2 weren't directly related to production costs most likely.
The original PS3s basically had an entire PS2 in them, and that cost quite a bit.
The "software BC" models had the GPU from the PS2, but no emotion engine. This saved quite a bit of money, but still allowed for (admittedly imperfect) PS2 emulation.
It would NOT be possible to re-add the existing implementation of software backwards compatibility to systems that don't have it, as the necessary hardware isn't there. However, in theory the current batch could probably run a good number of PS2 games at full-speed if an emulator was built in-house and adequately optimized (and I can guarantee that Sony has the resources to make a far better emulator than PCSX2 if they were so inclined).
It's unlikely that we'll ever see a homebrew PS2 emulator for PS3 that runs acceptably, and it's certain that a current PS2 implementation can't be patched to work on PS3s that do not support it, but it's quite possible for Sony to make one from scratch in the future.
