All joking aside, it is in fact possible to play a few early Windows games under Windows 3.1 and its close relatives, without completely overloading the capacity of DOSBox.

I found a nice setup for Windows 3.11 that some other guy had prepared for the PC version of DOSBox, and after just a little work I have been able to install and run that setup with the PS3 version of DOSBox and with early Windows versions of both Civilization and Colonization added to the package. Both run well in the sense of being reliable, though somewhat slow (especially Colonization, which also lacks most of its sounds).

Just install Windows 3.11, install your game, and try it out.
The 'Best of Windows Entertainment Pack' works pretty well

    Chip's Challenge FTW!

I actually made a separate "windows 3.11" PKG using my dosbox packaging method, but until MS makes it freeware (never gonna happen), I can't release it, sorry.

I didn't do much myself to make this work, really.

I just found a good and fairly compact Win 3.11 archive, and added the game folders for Civilization and Colonization into its root folder. Naturally I used early Windows versions of the games, in order for them to work well with this setup. I test-ran the setup in DOSBox on my PC first, and put links to the two games into an existing application group window of the Win 3.11 setup. And then I used Mr.GoodFrag's 'SDK' to make this setup into an installable PS3 PKG file.

Additional tweaking to this package would be needed to allow convenient gamepad use. But since these are Windows versions of the game it makes better sense to use a real keyboard and mouse with them, as trying to use Windows effectively with just gamepad is just barely possible, but effectively futile...

But I did make an effort with the DOS versions of the same games, redefining the gamepad usage to include all significant keyboard command keys, so I can use both games effectively without any keyboard, though I still use a mouse due to a weakness in the DOSBox design. Namely that use of the virtual mouse == joystick automatically disables all use of any joystick buttons for keyboard simulation. I wish there was some way around that, as I know that it should be no big deal technically to allow both at the same time. It is just that the DOSBox configuration methods won't let us do it. And it gets very boring very fast to hit R3 constantly to shift between the two modes. (Like every 2-3 seconds sometimes.)

    Best regards: dlanor
