I don't get the people who things like "we don't need a psp emulator because you can just go buy a psp."
That's not the point. This is the emulation section of the board. It's where we discuss coding and releasing emulators for the PS3. We do this to further our coding skills, not to play psp games. We need to make emulators for EVERYTHING. The more, the better.
And, a legit PSP emulator opens the door to a metric shit-ton of other already completed emulators that already exist on psp.
Indeed. Although it seems we ain't getting one any time soon, so I'll just buy one, even if it means supporting sony one more time (and i'm really pissed off at them right now). I just can't stay here and not play Ogre Tactics... damn!

Anyone got any advice for me? I'm thinking about the 3010 core ($182.00), is that alright or should I get another one? I'm looking to run backup games and homebrew on it, of course.
Should i be careful not to buy one with a firmware version 6.36 or more? Or can I just put cfws on anything I get?
The main idea of a emulator is up-scaling graphics and functionality of the games. a PSP game running at 1080p would probably be quite cool compared to the low res-screen on a PSP itself.
I am sure it can be done, but possibly by the time it is done the ps4 will be out with supposedly a **** load more power and anyone complaining about lack of processing power on such a system will haft to be a git. However making emulators on the xbox and ps3 platform is a challenge even when the games are clearly of lower detail. Even now SOME ps2 games can choke a high-end PC. But most run pretty good, minus the emulation bugs.
Playing PS2 games in high res is definitely awesome on the PC btw. But you definitely need a decent PC for it. A PS4 should be the ultimate solution to emulator coders, its a good idea to get started on such emulators for the ps3, even if they run like a pile of turds, once ps4 is out it will be a massive boom in power over ps3 (unless sony flop LMAO).
Best forget about it folks - there are no worthwhile PSP emulators on PC - and besides, there is nobody talented enough to do a PSP emu from the grounds up AND have it perform well on PS3 - you'd have to be a crazy SPU ninja and even then - the system is just not documented well enough to be able to satisfy people wanting to play most PSP games flawlessly like they're probably expecting by now from other emulators.
For similar reasons you can forget about Dolphin and PCSX2 unless the original authors themselves get involved - and even then, it's a big 'if' if they can produce anything that would want people to actually run it instead of the PC versions. NullDC also is not likely to happen anytime soon on PS3 - the PSP port also went nowhere - he just puts some time in it at some point, everybody gets excited, and then all development stops. So no point in waiting for it - it's likely not going to happen.
Let's face it here - all homebrew PS3 devs lack a proper dev environment right now - the closest we're getting to it right now is OtherOS++, and even that is very limited compared to a PS3 Debugging Station or Reference Station. You can't expect people to work miracles with piss-poor caveman tools - which is exactly what 'printf' debugging and running on OtherOS as a poor man's dev environment is.
Why aren't more people requesting 'debug/TOOL CFW' - and an alternative to 'Tuner' in addition to the copious cries for 'CFW 3.60'? That a lot has been released so far with these limited tools only points to the dedication of some of these porters - but there's a limit to what we can do with this, and people shouldn't take for granted that a homebrew dev can perform on the same level as professional devs with just a Retail unit with a Retail CFW. If Sony can't manage a PSP emu on PS3 - then fat chance in hell of a basement dweller achieving in doing so.
Heck - I'm seriously contemplating getting a 360 JTAG just so that I have at least some dev kit that is at least remotely similar to the PS3. Reference Stations/Debugging Stations for 400 Euros/500 dollars are just too expensive for me.
squarepusher, considering what you have done so far and how many people download and use your ports, I would think (like to think, anyway) that enough would be willing to donate to the cause. 400 sounds like a lot but it wouldn't take long to reach if even a small fraction chipped in.
EDIT: Just to add, I would also happily put any donation link you supplied on the weebly site.

Let's just say this instead - anyone who has any good offers for either a PS3 Tool or a 360 JTAG Jasper can definitely contact me - prices below the extortion rates that they're going at right now. I'd much rather prefer if people could help me out that way rather than give donations - I don't want to take anyone's money.
