Up yours Sony. All most of us ever really wanted was to develop on the system. OtherOS gave us that and we were happy... you took that away and we weren't.
Yeah support for PWADs will definitely be in after I add a launcher. If you know of a way to pass command line parameters to PS3 apps (I do not) it should already work if you just use something like "-file /dev_usb000/your.wad".
As for the other games that used the same engine, Heretic is probably the only one that you're going to see any time soon. Hexen is somewhat more complex (in Hexen they added many new features to the engine such as hubs (=non-linear level progression), polyobjects (walls can move, though with some restrictions) and a complete integrated scripting language (ACS). Strife's source was never released, though there is an ongoing effort (chocolate-strife) implementing Strife support in Chocolate Doom through reverse-engineering. (and ZDoom supports Strife too, but ZDoom is a Doom port that wants as little to do with Doom as possible while still being able to call itself Doom ;-)
Anyway it's like 6am here and I haven't slept yet so I'll probably do so now. ;-) The next thing that's coming will probably be sound effects. Music will have to wait because it needs a General MIDI softsynth (unless you cheat and use pre-recorded music but that would obviously be a problem with PWADs). I heard on #ps3dev that someone already ported libmodplug to the PS3 though and that it supports playing MIDIs in addition to tracker formats. Gotta look into that...
Heh, no rush man, THANK YOU for this! quick Q, I loaded the basic WADS (i, 2, plut and tnt) into a folder on my external (ps3doom, like ya said), but it just loaded doom 2. Im guessing thats why a dedicated launcher is needed? If so, thats cool, keep up the awesomez work!
Hmmm Quake and Xlinkkai...
Welcome to the previous level!
wow! I don't believe that I am playing doom w/o sound 20 years after its release!! Who needs GT5 when you can play DOOM?!!! Thankfully the current payloads support DOOM, I don't care about GT5 at all!!!
Cheers buddy for Doom. I love this game more then any other in the world. Well besides Duke3D. Can't wait to see more progress. I'll test it out tomorrow when I get up.
You kids and your music.
