ZX Spectrum Emulator –
04-08-2009,02:45 PM
Hi guys,
Has anyone managed to run DreamSpec, the ZX Spectrum emulator, from either a HDD or USB key on a slimline PS2 unit running FMCB1.8?
I have checked the forums and it seems burning to a cd is the only possibility - but then you get an error: calling sjpcm_init() on the load screen.
I have examined the DC_SPEC.elf file and have examined the contents in a hex-editor - hoping to see entries for cdfs, and to replace them with mass, but the elf file does not contain any entries for this as far as I can tell. So my plan for it to utilise USB(mass
has failed.
Was DreamSpec the only PS2 emulator for the PS2 - did anyone ever manage to create one with support for USB drives, keybaords and MC/HDD/USB save states?
Does anyone know where the source code for PS2DreamSpec now resides?
Thanks all

That would have failed anyway without adding new code to load the USB drivers.
Remember that the PS2 has no operating system, so you can't take any drivers for granted.
Applications have to load each device driver before they can access the corresponding device. (Though in some rare cases they can use a driver a previous application loaded.)

Sorry I haven't the faintest idea of the answers to any of those questions.
However, personally I'd find a ZX Spectrum emulator of very little interest. The spectrum was not a real game console, so that kind of nostalgia is out, and as a computer it was far to weak to ever be a serious contender even back in those days. I never bothered to get one myself, though I did have one of its early predecessors, the ZX80 (I still have it in a cupboard, but haven't tried to start it in years). That computer is so bare-bones primitive that this in itself is its major entertainment value...

Thanks for the reply dlanor - but I cannot let you get away with the above
According to http://worldofspectrum.org over 18,000 titles were released for the ZX Spectrum, the vast majority being games. Almost every one of the software houses in the UK started programming the zx spectrum, including Rare and Rockstar North.
Some of the greatest games in the 80's were released only on the ZX Spectrum too.
OK Whine over
Thanks for the feedback.

Not to mention the days when the ONLY microsoft product was a small Basic interpreter, and the only way to run it was to load it from punched paper tape...
