So, how to start figuring out what's the problem?

Currently I can't get ANY software supporting USB-media to work with ANY of my USB-devices. Tried several different memorysticks/cards and USB-HDDs (some of them even have worked months ago when tested with the small USBTEST-prog).

Depending on the USBD.IRX used the programs either hang, do nothing or atleast seem to initialize the USB-device when USBD is loaded.

    GRRRH...

Uh, the USB-supporting software is not compatible, or the USB-device that has worked before is not compatible, or the n+1 USBD.IRX drivers are not compatible?

If they worked before they should work now... Are you positive the program can actaully find USBD.IRX? (eg is it in the correct folder) I am using the naplink USBD.IRX, which works for me. I have it stored in mc0:/SYS-CONF/USBD.IRX

Running UAE, PS2MP3 etc. from PS2Link/InLink and the output clearly says the driver is found. And as I said, depending on the version of the driver used either nothing happens or the software just hangs when it opens the driver.

there is two ways this can happen from my experience (maybe there are more)
1-usbd driver miss some important functions
2-the drive is incompatible (missing of scsi istructions, ecc)
ps2os betatester, ps2tools codev, hdldump frontend dev
    6 sony mc w/ps2os 0.2.4, hdl, ps2rmp1.50,ps2mp3...
    na+hd maxtor diamondmax 7200 120GB
    PS2 SCPH-30004R V6 ÐM$3 V2 firm 2.4 B.4
    PS2 SCPH-50003 V9 ÐM$4 PRO firm toxic os 0.1

The media I've tested so far includes:

128MB USB-stick by HP (haven't tested this before)
64MB CF by Transcend on USB-reader (worked before)
256MB CF by Verbatim on USB-reader (worked before)
1GB CF by Kingston on USB-reader (worked before)
6GB HDD on USB-case (worked before)
120GB HDD on USB-case (worked before)

Now none of them works. Before USBTEST listed the directories just fine but now it just hangs when there's media connected, or with certain versions of the driver it tells there's no compatible media found.

Perhaps I need to test my GT Force wheel and if that still works then the ports are fine atleast.

this has to be a problem with USBD.IRX surely.. if the ports were broken you woulnd't get a signal at all. And there is surely a low likely hood that both ports are broken.

    i'm stumped on this one.

The problem is (most probably) in the usb_mass driver. Generaly most of the mass storage devices supports the same SCSI command set, but the initialization of the device differs. This initialization of the device is a special sequence of USB and SCSI commands which - if executed in bad order - cause the PS2 (IOP) to freeze. Unfortunately the sequence is different for different devices and I did't found the "magic combo" that initialize all devices without a problem. Everytime I change the init-sequence in favor of some new device I broke the compatibility with the other device (that I do not have and can't test).... sorry...

Is it possible to have the software recognize what device has been plugged in and load the correct version USBD.IRX for that device. So it would infact call up e.g. USBD1.IRX or USBD2.IRX or USBD3.IRX, (as long as there wasn't 20 different versions LOL).
