Question Regarding Playing PS2 Backups.

Hello PSX-Scene!

I have a few questions that I've been scouring the Internet for answers for the past few hours, to no avail. So I turn to you.

To preface, I have a DIY-hard modded PSTwo Slim, but it's not a chip. It's just a quick fix to allow me to pop open the top cover and switch out the discs. However, recently my PS2 bounces back an error message: "Unable to read disc" whenever I attempt to load any PS2 game or, even more tragically, my SwapMagic discs. I'm not sure what is causing the problem exactly, but I can't seem to resolve it. If there's a suggested troubleshooting for this problem, I'm willing to try this first.

This leads me to my next question. Is it possible to boot from a HDD without the use of the disc drive?

And a third, and unrelated question, though this is the wrong section. If I should post this in the appropriate section, just let me know and I'll make a new thread. I'm thinking about purchasing a PS3, but I'm only interested if I'm also able to play PS2 games. Obviously the new ones are no longer backwards compatible. I've read a few things about the Cobra dongle, but its limited compatibility doesn't make it seem like a viable choice. Is it possible to install a PS2 emulator (much like you would on a computer) on a Jailbroken or otherwise modded PS3?

1. My guess is that the PS2 laser is dying or close to dead. My first PS2 stopped reading DVDs after about 5 years of use so I replaced the laser.

2. I'm sure there is a way using a memory card exploit, but I haven't done anything with PS2's in years.

3. As far as I know, there is no homebrew PS2 emulator for the PS3, only Sony's built-in PS2 emulator which normally requires the PS3 to be put in Factory Service Mode but if the PS3 is system software 3.56 or higher, you won't be able to get out of Factory Service mode. Even then you would still have the same compatibility issues like the Cobra dongle which requires your PS3 to be on 3.55 or lower.

I don't know where you live but you may be able to pick up a used fat PS2 at your local GameStop for about $40 and they usually include a 1-year guarantee against problems (Not sure if they do that on PS2 anymore, but they do it on current gen systems).

Yeah, I considered picking up another PS2, unforunately the game store in my area doesn't have any for sale, so I'm out of luck in that department. Thanks anyway.
