    Probably 60 loops per second since it's off the video timing (there's a vsync wait). I agree that checking once every few seconds would do fine, and that's actually what I was thinking of doing :-)

    Good. A simple countdown timer would do fine. The precise check frequency doesn't matter, as long as it is somewhere around .5Hz - 2Hz, so there's no need to adapt it to PAL/NTSC either.

    A counter value of 60 (obviously) gives one check per second in NTSC and one per 1.2 seconds in PAL, and I think that should solve the problem completely, still allowing fairly quick detection of MC extraction or insertion.
