... and for some reason, no matter what I do, the CD can't be read in the PS2. I'm just trying to put couple of Genesis roms on the disc and get them to play using the PGEN (which I can run fine using the HDLoader)

I have used CDGENPS2 to make a bin/cue file with roms, and burned that on a CD using Alcohol 120%, set to option "Playstation 2" in it's pre-burn options dialog. Still, for some reason, when I put that CD in the drive, PGEN can't see any files on it, although it happily sees files on any other PS2 CD, be it a game, like Rez, or HDLoader's disc. So what am I doing wrong?

As you can figure I'm pretty new to this, but what I'm doing seems reasonable to me, yet I'm obviously doing something wrong.

you need a mod chip. one that is active after bootup

or you need ot make a UMCDR and use a version that supports it, such as codejunkies pgen (wityhj madx media creator) or pgen 1.25 (findable some places)

No mod chip is needed if you have an original CD with a bigger TOC than your copy...

Thanks a lot for all your help.

So basically, I'd either need a fliptop / knife solution, or track down a hacked version of pgen and use umcdr. I'm assuming not many homebrew emulators will support UMCDR? How about file managers such as PS2menu-k or PS2OS? Would they read UMCDRs?

Also, I'm not too clear if I need fliptop/knife if I try to use the 'bigger TOC disc' trick? I'm not exactly sure what that trick is, honestly, but I assume I'd need to swap without pressing the eject button.

Bigger TOC disk still requires fliptop/knife trick,
because every time you press eject the read TOC will be removed.

I know that PS2MENU 2.6 & Altimit support UMCDR. PGEN 1.2.5 is the only emulator which supports UMCDR & you can download PGEN 1.2.5 from http://www.psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24730
