i have SWAPMAGIC3.8.ELF (thats how it is named) on my usb drive. i go into ulaunchelf. locate the .elf file, hit circle to launch the file (like anything else). all i get is a black screen. there is a flicker for just an instant. but then just black screen.
what am i doing wrong? there must be some special step im not aware of.

Irc v3.8 coder is slightly different to the earlier versions and you just select it off the special menu.
so i have to make a SWAPMAGIC folder in the root directory of my usb drive. then rename the file to SMBOOT0.ELF.
then how do i launch the file? up + L1 while in ulaunchelf?

as per your instructions the way i understand them.
i made a folder on my usb drive root directory named SWAPMAGIC. i put the .elf in there and named it SWAPMAGIC.ELF
i started up my ps2 with usb drive plugged in... and it just went to freemcboot like usual. from there i go into ulaunchelf. mass\SWAPMAGIC\SWAPMAGIC.ELF to boot the file manually... and i get a black screen.
My bad I thought you meant you wanted to load homebrew from swap magic. If you press select whilst in uLE it'll bring you to a config screen you can then set a shortcut to the swap magic elf in whatever dictionary / device you have it stored on, you can then use that shortcut key press to launch swap magic coder anytime you run uLE, tbh swap magic coder is crap anyway other than the included code database.
i dont need a shortcut. i dont mind going into ulaunchelf and locating the file to boot it.
the problem is a black screen when i boot the file... nothing but a black screen... why the black screen?
i heard i can play a backup of ratchet and clank: up your arsenal this way. thats all im concerned with really. just trying to get ratchet 3 to work on backup
Then your swap magic elf is currupt or it's become fragmented on your usb device, i've launched the elf many times in uLE and pcsx2 no problem. Try a original disc in the drive whilst your launching the elf. If you can already run uLE why not use that instead of swap magic to swap discs? or use ESR DVD-V backups.
ratchet 3 doesn't work with ESR. nor any of the usb loaders..
how do i just use ulaunchelf to swap disks and play a backup?
fragmented huh... i didn't know .elf files had to be defragged. i only knew about usb games needing defragged. i'll check on that.
In the config options of uLE it has a Disc Control option turn this on and insert a original disc it'll then stop the disc after it's been recognised from there you can swap it with your backup, then navigate to the PS2Disc option to run the disc. The original disc will also need to have a bigger TOC than your backup.
original disk wont stop spinning. i have a feeling this is my dvd drive being on it's way out. rats.

and no the .elf file is not fragged. ive gooten it from a couple different sources now (including the link you showed me) and it just keeps giving me a black screen.

If it's still spinning then you can't have turned it on, does it recognise it as a PS2 disc in uLE or does it constantly spin around displaying Detecting Disc in red writing, if no red writing is displayed at all then the option is off.
