I was thinking maybe someone here knew some technical details of the HDD, I apologize if this is the incorrect forum.

So yesterday I got my 40GB Maxtor Drive all setup, installed the few games to it I had that were compatible and everything was great, until I looked at the partitions this morning. It dedicated one that was 512MB for...10MB for the Boot sequence of the DMS3 HDD Explorer. 502 MB Free. Ive installed I think 5 games and I've got 32GB free as the way it uses space is very strange. Anyone have any idea why the PS2 is so terribly inefficent at managing HDD space? The one thing I can possibly think of is...maybe it leaves space open and streams some stuff on the fly off the disc to the HDD partition?

Also, does the official HDD work in a similar manner, or is this just because I'm using unofficial tools for the HDD? At this rate I may need to pick up an 80GB one of these days and throw the 40GB into my PC.

yeah the whole "__boot" partition that is 512MB and only like 6MB are actually used has had me confused since i first used it. what i just did was place all my homebrew apps, ROM files, MP3's etc inside the __boot partition...so no space is wasted on my crappy 7BG hdd.

the hdd is just like a regular harddrive. meaning that you can put ANY type of file onto it, it just depends on what you have to open/run that file. examples are emulators and their roms, and other applications.

when the ps2reality media player "second edition" comes out, hdd support will enable playing video, audio, pictures, and more all from hdd. also i think the ps2reality team will enable ps2vfs to download content from PC (via network) onto the HDD.
