I have been out of the game for about a year and was wondering if there are any improvements or if anything got better for running games off a Slim PS2 USB hard drive?

There were 2 game loaders that were released within this past 2 years (2009-2010).

    They are:

    1. Open PS2 Loader v0.8: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f150/ope...pen+PS2+loader

    2. Playstation 2 External Storage Device Loader (PS2ESDL) v0.800: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f19/play...hlight=PS2ESDL

OPL supports USB devices, SMB setups and the PS2's internal HDD.
PS2ESDL supports USB devices only, but is tuned for USB devices and offers better USB device compatibility over OPL (So you might want to check this out if you are only planning to use USB devices).
    Unmodified SCPH-77006 with SM 3.6
SCPH-39006 with M-chip modchip, SCPH-10281 NA and refurb Seagate 80GB HDD
SCPH-10000 v1.00 with SCPH-10190 PCMCIA NA and SCPH-20400 HDD unit
    PS2ESDL v0.823B
