Dusting off my PS2, need some help assimilating back into the scene
Dusting off my PS2, need some help assimilating back into the scene –
I want to get back into the softmod scene with my fat PS2, but I need some help getting up to speed on what the latest greatest stuff is. Let's see if this is a throwback. This is what I have:
Fat PS2 SCPH-30001, network adapter, internal HDD
LaunchELF v4.12 (booted from a PSX Dexter's Laboratory disc)
From what I gather so far, I need to get:
- Free McBoot so that I don't need a boot disc
- uLE (4.42?) to replace LaunchELF
- OPL (0.9?) to replace HDLoader, as it is compatible with more games
I just want to get steered in the right direction, so please correct me if I'm wrong on anything. I was originally motivated to update because I just tried GSM and was having problems exiting anywhere except to the PS2 Browser.

All you need to do is download the Free McBoot Noobie Package and put it on a flash drive. Then use uLaunch to run the installer. You might want to back up your game saves first. Ideally you want to use another memory card in case something goes wrong, you don't want to lose your independence exploit until you are happy that Free McBoot is working okay. The Noobie Package comes with uLaunch, OPL, SMS & ESR.

Thank you for the response. I think I'll go to the store today and get a new memory card just for Free McBoot. I have another question, though.
I notice when I load my HDD up in WinHIIP, it shows my drive (189.92Gb) and says HDLoader 24bit. In the WinHIIP Options, Override Application Mode is set on 28bit HDLoader.
Do I need to put it on 48bit? I've read posts with different information; Some say you have to format to change to 48bit. Others say you don't have to format.
My assumption is that my HDD is big enough that it needs 48bit, and that I should change it anyways because 28bit is a thing of the past.
If you want to use the full size you will have to go 48bit
