All I have read over the last few weeks is sony banging on about all the hacks and exploits will ruin the online experience for the legitimate gamer.

"Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for you, our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats," Sony stated. "By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve."

Microsoft on the other hand with the kinect device are going the other way and saying right ok maybe there is a market here for the kinect device to be ported over to the pc....lets embrace this.

I am quite sure there are many ps3 users out there who use their jailbroken ps3 without going online, I am one of them I cant stand playing the games online as 9/10 even on local servers they tend to laag alot so i stick to my pc for online gaming.

So why dont sony embrace all the "haxs" and say okie you want a n64 emu fine here are the tools.

you want linux back fine here are the tools.

But like microsoft, maybe charge a royalty fee. The talented devs can have the tools for free but you have to sell the software/apps for a small fee and sony has a small percentage of the fee.

sony could even develop a custom firmware that does not allow online gameplay. IDK I just think sony are going way too far. No matter what they do....courts, police, raids etc their will always be hackers out there looking at ways to piss big companys off.

microsoft would ban and sue those people aswell if their opensource kinect drivers lead to SOFTWARE PIRACY

    hacking != hacking

jailbreaks DID open the door for piracy, there's no argueing about that

This is where the line is blurry. geohot and graf_chokolo may be hacking the PS3, but they are not making it easy for anyone to pirate games. Saying that jailbreaking leads to piracy is not far from the truth, but directly trying to pin piracy ON the hackers who are explicitly trying to keep their jailbreaks piracy-free, well that's just retarded.

Just because people take the existing knowledge and change it to break the law doesn't mean that the ones who created the original knowledge are or should be held responsible. With such logic, we'd have no technology. I mean, if that were the case, I'm sure nobody would have kept making cell phones when the few figured out they could be used as bomb detonators. An extreme example, I know, but one has to be extreme when trying to explain this to people who don't always get it.

i'm not saying that jailbreakers should be prosecuted

i'm just saying that jailbreaking IS what makes piracy possible, that's a fact.
(and don't twist this into me saying 'omg all jailbreakers are pirates'. but all PS3 pirates are jailbreakers. period.)
so just because Microsoft doesn't care about someone fooling around with a piece of hardware, it doesn't mean they're any less 'evil' when it comes to hacking.

Nice chart. Saw it when the PS3 was first broken 6 months ago.

If Sony really wanted to promote creativity, they wouldn't have tried to sue the guy who hacked their AIBO or shut them down.

It is, after all, a toy that the consumer bought. It isn't really hurting Sony to have people program their own robots the way they want. In fact, it's promoting creativity like M$ and the Kinect. Sony is just trying to show off their e-peen, saying "I'm a bad mofo. Don't play against MY rules."

Yeah, software piracy is wrong, but so is trying to stop people from finding new ways to use stuff they bought. Let's face it, Sony is NOT gonna play nice with independent developers. This is why hacking makes them nervous. These guys are coming up with stuff Sony can't.

Hell, if all 3 major companies were to cooperate, they could come up with some kick ass stuff people would love to get their hands on.

    Case in point...
