is Wutangrza's CFW+KMEAW patch better than OFW3.55+Geohot patch?
is Wutangrza's CFW+KMEAW patch better than OFW3.55+Geohot patch? –
Are there games that works on the new method and do not work with OFW3.55 and geohot patch?
Also, are there games that work on Geohot patch but NO on Wutangrza+KMEAW?
trying to understand if I should update now..
From what I've been reading the KMEAW CFW seems to be working better. That goes for non-bricking and game compatibility.
I still haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet. I'm running and trying to catch it but not there yet. Maybe I'll eventually catch it.
hard to say which is "better".
because these cfw are entirely different.
- geohot cfw only allows running and installing of signed applications/games.
- kmeaw/wutangrza cfw uses fluke1s tools, so its peek&poke firmware + kmeaw some extra bypasses to install unsigned applications. (you need geohot patch on wutangrza for installation of pkgs. no installing of unsigned pkgs, as far as i know). i recommend kmeaw cfw, as it has all of wutanrza's features + more. there have also been several issues reported, that wutang+geo+patch causes (more) problems, according to dukio.
plx dont confuse kmeaw patch with kmeaw cfw.
if you want to run games on geohot cfw, you have to modify the eboot and put it in a signed package. backup managers wont work. thats because lv2 wont be touched by that cfw. not many games work that way, and its sometimes hard to find a working eboot, and editing/signing i would not recommend for beginners. although this is definetly the safest method, people are afraid of getting banned from psn, because the signing tools only use 1 keypair, the 1 thats released.
kmeaw (and wutangrza) is, as stated above, a peek&poke firmware. that means, you can modify lv2 in the memory (only, which makes it much safer than waninkoko cfw) allowing for syscalls (we have to use an installed pkg for that, until BMs are updated. just start and close the little tool everytime you reboot your ps3). that means, backup manager will work. they work a different way than modified eboots. they basically emulate a bluray, so the game shows up in the xmb as a legit disc. but you need 1 legit/original game for most. most games work that way. for more information on what games will work, check out this list (List of Working and Non-Working Games for PS3 (12/22/2010) (273 Games)).
if you want homebrew apps only, go with geohot. if you want to play games, use kmaew. games that run under geohot should always work on kmeaw, too.
oh, and by the way: geohot is a patch-pup, while kmaew is a complet fw-pup. the risk of bricking should be equal and is very low. i think there are no reported bricks using those.
(correct me, if im wrong on anything :P)

You can install both and have the best of both worlds. Install wutangs cfw and then geohots.
you have to do that anyway, because you cant install pkgs without the geohot, if i remember correctly. and as i already said, wutangrza+geo causes problems, according to dukio news.
and yea, maybe its been working great for some so far, but if you got the choice.. go for kmeaw.
So to clarify, kmeaw's CFW is essentially my CFW + Geo's (with a tweak). The lv2_kernel.self and lv1.self contained in his CFW are 100% identical to the selfs in my CFW, down to the string fuzzing.
There really isn't much of a difference between installing mine + geo's versus installing just kmeaw's, other than kmeaw's will let you install unsigned packages (or at least a larger subset of packages, I heard the unsigned bit was bugged).
Also, there have been no reported bricks using either of our firmwares.
As I've already said, moving forward I suggest everyone just use kmeaw's firmware, as it is essentially mine + geo's + a small tweak.
Thank you very much peeps, going to update to kmeaw's firmware now
