Would an external HDD allow me more space for game backups?

Firstly, I am not entirely sure that this is the right part of the forum to post this on, so please feel free to move this to its correct location.
Basically i have a fat 40GB CFW jailbreaked ps3 and i cant get over 14GB of free space, so i am thinking of buying an external HDD in order to be able to hold more games on it at a time. However I am unsure if this will mean that i can just store more games BUT not be able to play them, or if i can actually play them as if they were downloaded onto my internal HDD via a backup manager.
If that made no sense, please tell me and ill try to elaborate.
Thanks!

You need to look into which games run ok from external. I'm not up on the NTFS developments etc but a lot of games work from a fat32 formatted external drive anyway.

Yes you can play from external, but not all games will work. The external needs to be formatted fat 32. Fat will not support files over 4 gb and some games have files larger than that. I'd suggest getting a new internal and an external.

okay, do you know of any places i can look these up? at the moment i constantly have space for one game, however if it is as simple as getting them onto the external HDD and holding them there until copying to the Internal HDD then it would probably be beneficial for me to do. Thanks
