The overhead and perhaps random throughput some people have while streaming even over gigabit can be a factor; imagine if that happens the game would lock up while seeking data or freeze entirely.
Im not too familiar with the hardware specs of the PS3... Now for the dune player is designed with internal memory allocated for buffering...So when you get loss of packets, you wouldn't even know it.
