7200 RPM has the tendency to give PS3's the YLOD. Better to stay with a 5400 RPM drive due to heat issues. People will say that the 7200 RPM is working just fine for them, but for the amount of time I've read these forums, I've seen plenty of people get the YLOD by using them.

From what I know 7200 rpm is fine on external drive, but don't use for Internal drive.

I have used my external 7200 rpm as most are that speed, since Sept and had no issues.

Isn't that just for internal drives, too worry about the speed?

after lookin at some compatibility lists, theres definitely some games that seem to play choppy from external.

i'm just going off that tho, i'm sure most games play fine off external.

so it's advisable to use 5400RPM for internal and 7200RPM for External..
and it's better to use Internal.. I played my PC game from my external HDD, and it died after 1 year...

Yes its best too stay with 5400rpm for Internal, but 7200 is fine for External

I wouldn't say its best too use internal, but some games just won't play on external, and will play on Internal.
I upgraded my PS3 earlier this fall from an 80gb to 500gb anyway.

And my new slim has 320GB that it came with.

I have external eSata/USB drive on my pc, and they are both holding good so far.

I have them both connected as eSata though.

On the PS3 or any console, if you shut down the console properly, they should last fine. But any hdd can have failure.

    first question what is YLOD?
I have a 2tb external 7200rpm it runs games fine i havent had any issuses with it. Im unsure of transfer speed through the usb becauce my netbook gets around 4.5 mbs when downloanding and copying stuff to the drive. But my desktop gets like 20 something mbs and i thought these usb drives could only transfer at 4.5 mbs.

Also longer life out of your externals if you turn them off when your not using them. I have seen were people only had them a year and they break. then you ask them why they left it on 24 hours 7 days a week and were it cant breathe good and there like i didnt know i wasnt suposse to.
