Why back up your original ps3 game? Doesnt that defeat the purpose of having a jb or cfw on your ps3?

I know about emulators and homebrew but from the look at the views (over 1000) nobody cares about that stuff that much

Are they trying to justify not pirate when reality over 90% of ppl do? If the backup dont work so bad just play your original disk

    (cough gt5)

I'm on my forth ps3. The first 3 where because of broken blu ray laser. Now I back up my games and don't have to worry about that. Plus games on the hard drive load faster. Using a game manager is a lot easier then changing disks.

I like the fact that I don't have to switch discs.

If I make a copy, I can then modify the files of that copy, and play the game. I can't change the files on the disk, but I can modify the copy on the hard drive.

Eventually, I'm assuming the lasers in our PS3s will die. They did in my PS1, and they did a lot faster in my PS2, so I'm assuming they will with the PS3. Once that happens, you ship it to Sony and get it fixed for a fee. I hate that process, I run whatever games I can off my hard drive. My PS2 laser is about dead again, and I'm sick of sending it in to Sony to fix. I instead bought a PS2 hard drive and can now only play whatever games work using that method. It's the 8th time it has died, if Sony can't make it last, then screw them.

If my neighbor wants to borrow a game I'm currently playing, or vise versa, and a copy of it works on my PS3, it beats buying a 2nd copy. We live in the same apartment building and are only a few apartments away. Probably not legal, but I'm not hunting down another copy for $60 with taxes, neither of us are made of money.

What do you expect people to all say "you got me, I pirate games and I just don't know why I do it." People pirate games. It's that simple. But your reasoning behind CFW and backups are ignorant to say the least.

Anyways I'll just copy and paste my reply :

But to tldr it a bit. Because they want to remain on the legal side of the spectrum? Because they don't wanna waste a download for a game they already own? I mean seriously this question has soo many damn answers it's not even funny. But it seems you are doing this either to get banned, piss of the admins, or just to act stupid. I can't figure out which.

Even your originally owned games have to be patched so you would back them up and put them on your HDD. They need to be patched if they are built with a higher FW than your CFW.

"If you actually own the original why the need for a CFW?"

Because even originals don't work if they requre a higher firmware than the one you have installed. Also there are a lot of people that want linux, homebrew, and the ability to backup games so they can save their laser as well as discs.

So here's a nice short list for you : Reasons why people want CFW and backup their original games rather than just play using disc.
    1) Linux
    2) Homebrew
    3) If you have a hacked PS3, games that are on a higher firmware won't run. So you need to patch them. Yes that even means Original store bought games. They won't run from the disc if they require a higher firmware. They will just bitch at you to upgrade to OFW and won't run until than.
    4) Less wear and tear on the drive laser
    5) Less wear and tear on the actual disc.
    6) Better performance on HDD compared to disc

I'm sorry but just because people do pirate, doesn't mean they only pirate. Why do all of these piracy arguments only see in black or white? Any argument has a grey area. Why wouldn't a person with a CFW not buy the games?

Hacking = / = Piracy = / CFW = / Piracy = / = Hacking (Notice the infinite loop?) That means Hacking DOES NOT EQUAL Piracy, piracy DOES NOT EQUAL CFW. Just because you have CFW doesn't mean you pirate.

Even if you own the original game you need CFW if you want to hack your PS3 for homebrew and linux. Likewise you have to use patches with those games on CFW if they require a higher firmware than your CFW.

About the speed -> It does improve load times so it is a valid reason.

Just because you don't have enough knowledge about the PS3, CFW, etc, doesn't mean everyone is automatically a pirate.

Usually when someone has to make a blanket statement that all CFW users are pirates, they are either one of the following(or all of them..) 1) A high and mighty anti piracy advocate. 2) Don't have enough knowledge about the platform and it's hacks to figure out why people would need backups. 3) Don't understand why backups are beneficial in the first place.

Backups are actually legal. They are actually used for the reasons I stated. ( Less wear and tear on drive plus disc, faster loading speeds.)

How can you say that? You are just being ignorant saying that. Just because we are all on a hacking forum doesn't mean we all pirate. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING. Hacking does not mean pirating. You people need to get that through your thick skulls.

You know blanket statements just make you look foolish. I doubt you have seen everyone's game collection, so you need to stop making ignorant blanket statements.

EDIT: While yes some people will always pirate on a hacked console. Hacking does not mean piracy. They are two completely different terms. Some people are in fact interested in hacking their consoles only for homebrew and linux. I don't know if you have tried developing on the PS3, but it's a hell of a lot of fun, and it's easier with a CFW on linux.

EDIT2: With that said, yes I do pirate games. But I'm tired of people ignorantly throwing out blanket statements as if they have seen the contents of everyone's home. Likewise just because I pirate games, doesn't mean I don't know why legit people would use a hacked PS3. I use piracy as a means to test new games. If I enjoy the game, I'll buy it. If I don't like the game, I just delete the release and move on. I use piracy as a "full" demo of the final product to give myself a more educated consumer decision on whether or not to buy the game.

Now I'm sure people will say I'm full of shit, but whatever. It doesn't bother me none. I know what I do, and that's all I'm worried about.

You dont get it? Of course everyone knows the answers. If you actually look at the questions that people ask people want to give people a hard time if they ask a simple question that they can work. Look at the psp (if you own a hacked one you will know) and sorry about the multiple post (wonder how do I delete it) but anyways I own two ps3's I buy the newer games in a way to replace all the ones that I "backed up" but if you actually own original games then whats the point of wasting your precious hd space.... but you got to say MOST people with a cfw or jb pirate a game and you cant even say otherwise ... the ? was a legitimate reason because all the games I own had no desire to back them up? The word backup is really meant for if the game gets broken or not... but 90% of the time it is piracy

what ever they say, backing up games is good. And yes, even if u have the original disc. I backed up my games almost everywhere (on the ps3, on my laptops, even on dvd discs). I dont want my discs end up being scratched. Plus it will protect your laser.

Yep, It's nice to be able to mod your games. And not having to swap discs in and out is nice. (keeps the kids grubby fingerprints off the discs).
No pirated games on my system, just trying to keep my discs safe, and prolong the life of my blu-ray drive.

Are you serious? Here let me give you some reasons to back up your original game.
    1. Games tend to run faster from the hard drive, with reduced loading times and smoother animation especially in games like the fallout series.
    2. Your original games can stay safely put away in their cases preserving their lifespan.
    3. Conveniance-its nice not to have to change discs every time you want to change games.
    4. You cant write to your gamedisk, however If you have your game backed up, there are several games that can be modified to your enjoyment(such as adding a debug mega pistol in fallout new vegas). This is a big plus for some people.
    5. If you go on a trip, and bring your ps3 you can still play your games without dragging around all your discs.
    6. Some games when backed up will run discless allowing you to preserve the lifespan of your blu ray laser and motor.
    7. No problems with skipping due to scratched discs.

I'm sure I could think of more, but off the top of my head, there is 7 good reasons to back up your original discs that have absolutely nothing to do with piracy. I hope this helps your pondering.
The reluctance to put away childish things may be a requirement of genius...
