what type of hdd? link?
external usb or external from internal sata port?
any special install?
I have WD 750GB internals (5400) with WD 2TB externals on two of my PS3's. No problems running any game from either drive on either machine. You can get the internals from Amazon or Newegg for $92.00 and the externals are often on sale from Newegg or Dell for $90.00.
Not all 1TB drives will fit, even with caddy modification. I ordered a Samsung 1TB that was 12.5mm and it wasn't possible to connect even without the caddy completely. I had to downsize to a 500GB 9mm drive.
Has someone the Seagate 2.5" 500GB 7200rpm HDD? Is it working OK, without stuttering?
I'm thinking about buying this Seagate HDD or Samsung Spinpoint M7. Both of them have similar prices.
I'm pretty sure there is an issue with all internal PS3 drives 640GB and higher where if you use the "restore file system" in the recovery menu (option #3), it will force a reformat on your drive instead of fixing your system files (and that happens even after a fresh format on a brand new surface tested drive).
If anyone reading this has an internal drive 640GB+ and has "restore file system" working perfectly fine, please post the brand/model # of your hard drive.
seeing how this old thread has been re-upped I would like to elaborate on the information here 1TB is the largest capacity supported for internal (some older PS3s need extensive modification for 12.5mm tall HDDs to fit physically) 2TB is the largest capacity supported for external (USB 2.0) unless change in the new models with hardware
I disagree on that definition of "supported". I'd say "partially supported" would be more correct.
I have yet to find a single drive 640GB or over that doesn't suffer from the bug I described above.
If you have any sort of corruption on your drive or you get forced at any time to use the "restore file system" options, having a full reformat forced on you no matter the condition of your drive sure doesn't sound like a fully supported drive to me. :(
