I was under the impression, some code was 'injected' by these dongles, while power-on.
That would make it very similar to FMCB [it's 'RAW-Capabilities', without hacked OSDSYS] (for example stuff like system-init, where a lot of Modchip-Vendors/Producers have fixed theirs very late in their firmwares for PS2-Chips,..).
that being said the backup manager code is already out in the wild like hdloader was back in the day. crazyc took the original code and ran with it!!
I also think, that the open alternative probably has the best chances (see FMCB, compared to it's commercial counterparts...).
An open-Source-Backupmanager would be even more usefull, too!
