okay, I just found out yesterday that the PS3 was finally hacked! which is why I just made my account now, anyways I'm buying a ps3 just because of backup manager, so I can backup my ps3 games like I did for my wii games, but anyways im getting one in four days if not sooner so I have alot of questions to ask:

    1: Firmwares

1.0 what firmwares can be jailbroken and run games off backup manager?
which firmware versions can run the backup managers. If I recall correctly I believe the newest firmware is 3.55 and you cant run backup manager on it but you can jailbreak it, BUT I VERY WELL MAY BE WRONG, because if you could run backup manager and load games off it on the new one that would be awesome because you might even be able to take it ONLINE

1.1 Whats my chance of getting a firmware for backup manager from buying a PS3 slim from a local store?
I assume if I went out to a local store and bought a ps3, the firmware versions would NOT be consistent. If they would be, what firmware do they
all come with and can that firmware be jailbroken and run games off of backup manager? if not, whats my chance of getting a PS3 with a firmware that can be jailbroken, and run games off the manager

1.2 what about just asking the store for a ps3 with the firmware I want?
This might be a terrible idea, but what if I just request a local store sells me a Playstation 3 that has a firmware I want . Theres a side to me saying
"oh they probably don't care." and another one like
"idk... wouldn't they have to open a brand new ps3 case if I want mine new... they'd probably say no".
so idk. but I think that would be awesome if they did because then I'd have no more worries about being stuck witch a ps3 that doesn't have a backup manager!

1.3 what should I do to try to get a PS3 with the firmware I want? (one that can run games off backup loader)
If you wanted backup manager so badly you were going to buy a PS3 just because of it, like me, what would recommend I do? how would you do your best to try to get one with a firmware that can load a game off a stable backup manager.

    2: Backup Manager

2.0 Which backup manager should I get?

    Backup Manager Vesion 1:
Pros: blu ray support unlike version 2
cons: when you load up backup manager (either in the menu or playing a game) and you shut off you console from there, the next time you load up backup manager, all your games will be CORRUPT FILES!!! so I'd have to he install ALL my games again.
    Backup Manager Version 2:
Pros: you can shut down from within backup manager or while playing a game on backup manager and your games will not be corrupted, which would happen on version 1
cons: I heard no blu ray support?? what?? I mean... blu ray movie or like the games will still be 1080p or whatever but they wont have the blu ray technology on them?
So right now it looks like I'd choose backup manager 2. Tell me which one you recommend and why?

2.1 Downloadable content with games on Backup Manager
Can you get DLC to work with games on Backup Manager this would be nice. If so, what are the requirements, and how could I do it.

I know thats a TON to cover, but thanks for any help.

I'm in the same boat man, I discovered this today and here's what I did after reading around for a bit. I have a 160GB Ps3 Slim btw from Thanksgiving. I think the latest firmware is 3.55 so any Slim should be fine:

Go to the 2nd sticky in this forum, the one about the custom firmware tutorial
Follow it for the kmeaw cfw
Install either multiman or rogero's backup manager.

This is where I'm stuck. I ran multiman and copied my God of War Collection Blu-Ray, but when I went to play it, there was either a black screen or it refused to launch. This is with everything at the default settings.

Then I installed rogero and I'm doing the same thing again, but I'm not sure how to set it to install to the app_folder/PS3_game (or something) folder. I read you need to install the game into that folder? It's not in the settings for that backup manager.

Also, do I need to run the lv2 pkg thing every time I turn on my system and wanna play a backup game?

Not really a ton to cover. You make it much more complex than it is lol. As of today, all firmware versions support backup managers and can be jailbroken. Basically, you update to the latest firmware (v 3.55), then you follow instructions on how to install wutangrza's custom firmware through recovery mode, then follow instructions on how to install GEOHOT's custom firmware through the XMB (regular ps3 menu), and then find and follow instructions on how to install the lv2 package and then the multiman package (which is the backup manager) and thats it. It should take probably like 30 minutes to an hour.

Go here: PS3 CFWs with Backup Managers

Then follow the instructions on the left hand side for WutangRZA's CFW.

As of right now, 3.55 is JB. Currently the best method in my opinion is going to Wutangrza CFW, patching GeoHot CFW over the top, using L2.pkg to remove L2 protection, and using Multiman for Backups. Opinions may vary, but this is what I am currently running.
    See:
    HTML Code:

1.1 Whats my chance of getting a firmware for backup manager from buying a PS3 slim from a local store?
Current firmware is 3.55 or lower. Just update to 3.55 and use above method.

1.2 what about just asking the store for a ps3 with the firmware I want?
Depending on where you went, I doubt they would even know what firmware was, let alone what version shipped with each SKU.

1.3 what should I do to try to get a PS3 with the firmware I want? (one that can run games off backup loader)
Again, no worries here. Highest FW is jailbroken.

    2: Backup Manager
2.0 Which backup manager should I get?
Gonna ignore 1/2 and just say Multiman seems to have a high compatability rate currently.
    HTML Code:

Can you get DLC to work with games on Backup Manager this would be nice. If so, what are the requirements, and how could I do it.
Pretty sure any DLC would be usable, since IIRC, MultiMAN pretty much mounts a virtual BD-ROM Drive so it is like you are running with the disk in the console, but not really. Although, at this time I would avoid going on PSN, as we do not know if/when the ban-waves will come and any DLC linked to your account you cannot re-download if you get banned from PSN

Thanks for all the help, anyways I'm still mixed up

    okay, obviously i see this:
Download 3.55 OFW, the CFW patch file, the LV2 patch pkg and geohot's CFW, see below.

Install (or restore) OFW 3.55 - recovery mode may be needed.

Patch the OFW 3.55 .PUP file using the 'bspatch' utility:
    bspatch PS3UPDAT_OFW.PUP PS3UPDAT.PUP Wutangrza-3.55.patch

Confirm that the resulting .PUP has this md5 sum:
    05933bb7a89bee87b0aa45c74f980e81

Update to the newly created .PUP by moving it onto a
storage device into the PS3/UPDATE directory.

Now, update to geohot's CFW from XMB.

Install the LV2 package by moving it onto a storage device
into the root directory and installing it from XMB ('Install Package')

Done, you may now install multiMAN and run backups - remember that you
have to run the LV2 patch package after each boot.

I know you gus are probably going to laugh and totally call me a noob but I'm still confused. I assume OFW is "official firmware" and CFW is "Custom Firmware". This tells me what to do step by step but since I'm a noob to this, I need to know how to do it, because alot of you guys can probably figure this out, or have already been told, but not me.

Like for these steps do I use a flash dive, modchip (hopefully not), I mean, Its like someone telling me to play a song but never told me how to read music, I guess?

Also I don't know if this matters, but the only computer in my house with a network card is this macintosh I'm using and I'm using my neighbors network. meaning Id have to drop these files on a thumb drive to put them on my pc. Thats fine though right? anyways, I don't think I should try this until I can understand how to do it. If someone could explain this whole procedure word for word, how to do it for a relatively new hacker that would help a lot. Like I said before though "This tells me what to do, but I have to know how to do it"

If I can add a couple of noob questions of my own to this thread, I wanted to ask a few questions about backup managers and playing online. I've been reading around a bit but still can't find my answers, and a thread asking about the basics seems like a good place to post them.

I know that some BMs report to PSN that you're playing a different game while you're in the MB, such as Modern Warfare 2, instead of screaming out "SpiderDude is currently playing Backup Manager X". I also know that some BMs will clear out your list of most recently played games upon exit, that way your PS3 doesn't report back that you've been playing "Homebrew App Y".

My two-part question is: are there any other anti-PSN-reporting features in any backup managers, and what backup managers support which features?
SpiderDude, SpiderDude, does whatever a spider... coud. Dammit.

You use a flash drive. Google how to do updates via flash drive, and install it. Some of them you have to install via recovery mode. Google how to do that. All of it is easy. All you need is a flash drive and youre good to go.
