Do I need to have one in order to play backed up games once I've jailbroken my system, or will the dongle/custom firmware suffice? I've read a lot about various backup managers and Multiman seems to be the one to go for, but I still don't exactly know what it does.

I'm pretty paranoid about accidentally updating my PS3 so I've not connected my PS3 to the Internet at all - will that hurt the functionality of the backup manager? According to the guides and tutorials you need to connect to the Internet to downloaded updates of games...is there a way to do that manually via the PC? (So I can just transfer the files to the PS3 later.)

I'm sorry if these questions seem n00by, but I haven't been able to find the answers yet, so I thought I'd ask here. Hope you can help!

Yes you need one Multiman and rogero are best, multiman is updated constantly so i use that most often. I would use Kmeaw 3.55 CFW. Multiman plays backups (along BDEMU2.PKG), does FTP, can play videos, can use for emulators (like snes) and more.

Also besides keeping your PS3 disconnected from internet you can go to the XMB menu (first screen after ps3 boots) go to settings on left then scroll down to system settings pick it, then turn automatic download off. And yes you can get game updates from the PC, PS3Index - Your PS3 Database, PS3 Patch Search, or http://store.brewology.com/index.php?lang=

download the .pkg (update you want), then put it on the ROOT of a USB stick, plug stick into PS3 then pick install package files under GAME in XMB menu.

Hey, thanks for the replies, they helped a lot! Are there other firmwares to choose from besides Kmeaw 3.55 CFW? What are their pros and cons? (I see lots of people use Kmeaw, so I assumed it was the best, but I would like to know about alternatives.)

There's wanikoko which is like Kmeaw but has less pkg support and can brick some systems, rebug too much to explain go here for more http://psx-scene.com/forums/f191/rel...-55-1-a-84343/ (RELEASED - REBUG 3.41.2 and REBUG 3.55.1), wutangrzas (earlier CFW) lv2, PS3ITA (from italian makers) w/ PSN support (doesnt work anymore), geohotz 3.55 (where it all started), acid & hermes 3.41 only, etc etc.

CFW is basically just for letting you play backups and install homebrew and giving you full access to the PS3, Kmeaw is the most stable at doing this, rebug lets you do more but this is mainly for advanced users and devs. Then there's spoof's mainly for tricking PSN (quickly get banned anyway) not tricking games.

Oh cool, I didn't know there were so many options. Is kmeaw the safest and most n00b-friendly CFW? If so I'll probably just get that.

Yes its the most stable and noob friendly, plus a lot more people on this forum have it thus more support for it.
