Is update required when changing the Internal drive?
Is update required when changing the Internal drive? –

I am currently in the process of getting a 640gb HDD for the internal and I am on 3.41 CFW.
If I change the Hard drive, would the PS3 require me to update to the latest firmware or will I still be able to run it on 3.41?
If I cannot I prob cancel my order so need to know as soon as possible please.. Thanks

make sure that your network cable is not plugged in and that you're not connecting wirelessly. Then the ps3 will never even know that it actually NEEDS to upgrade.

i wish i had a definitive answer for you, but as far as for my case, i was on 3.55 and i just replaced my hdd for a 500gig and it just asked me to format, nothing else.

Install 3.41 OFW via recovery, upgrade HDD (have thumb drive from installing 3.41 OFW handy), reinstall 3.41 CFW.

So it will ask for update?

It will ask for the firmware that was previously installed on the HDD, hence why you should install OFW first via recovery and then use that same thumbdrive for when you upgrade the HDD.

As far as I know it only does this on 16mb nand consoles. 256mb nand can swap hd's without any need for the firmware as none of it's stored on the hd.

How do i know which nand my ps3 is as I currently do not know this? And does anyone know how long it will take to backup a 320gb HDD and when using the backup utility on the ps3, will it backup my internal games too?
