anyone?

Have you been playin by disc lately?? if you have and noticed freezing mid way...
then its sounds like ur have a dying laser...
i had the same thing....
if not then idk...b
i havnt played it at all, i just want to back it up, but other games work flawlessly from disk

Even with flawless disc operation, one possible reason for failed backup is if you have failed to provide sufficient free space on the backup HDD. FF13 is a rather large game, and requires almost 41 GiB of free space for successful install.
Another thing that can break an install operation seems to be due to some critical timing in the routine handling the progress bar. Many have found that large games often fail to install if the progress bar is left on screen during the install, but that the same install works fine when repeated in a session where you close the progress bar directly after starting the backup operation. Doing so has helped me a few times with large games.
NB: The advice about progress bar relates to multiMAN, which is the only PS3 backup manager I use nowdays.
NB: But the advice below and in the first paragraph of this post applies to all PS3 backup managers.
Yet another thing to consider (though it shouldn't stop the backup attempt) is that FF13 contains one file that is larger than the 4GB limit of the FAT32 file system used on external USB drives. So that file will have to be split into two and given new names to allow for re-splicing into a single file if/when you use multiMAN to copy that game to the internal HDD.
On the external HDD such a backup, containing split files, is not really valid for playing. It is only valid as a storage backup for future use on internal HDD. Some games may still be played at least partially from such an external drive with those split files, but when the game reaches a part were a split file is needed, that file access will fail, and the consequences of that will vary depending on how badly the game code needed that file content. (If it holds program code or game scripts you can surely expect a crash there...)
So for safe and complete gameplay you need to install such games on internal HDD.
Best regards: dlanor
I'm pretty sure FFXIII has at least one file over 4GB so you will only be able to back it up to your internal HDD
i tried backing up to the internal HDD, same problem. maybe i need fix permissions? hmm.

still, anyone?

Considering your signature says you've got a 60GB Ps3, i'd have to say you're main problem would have to be the amount of free space you have on your hdd.
If you managed to free up enough space though, and it still doesn't work, i'd think it'd be something wrong with the disc. Seeing as one of your last posts said you haven't played it yet, i feel like this is most likely the cause.
The OP is trying to back it up to the external hd, so I don't know what the internal hd has to do with it. I backed up my copy of FFXIII with no problems at all. Only bad part was it took almost 2 hours to back up. I upgraded my internal to 500gb and that's where I keep everything now. I even backed it up into my ext 500gb and it still runs. So I'm not sure what the problem is.
