is there a FAQ or detailed instructions for getting to this point? I looked through 13 pages on this sub-board, but didnt see anything.
I managed to JB using a sansa e260, got Open Manager or Backup manager (are they the same?) installed, and ftp'd a downloaded backup to the internal HD.
In one of the threads I read, I realized I was ftp'ing to the wrong place...eventually I ftpd to a XXXX12345 folder under hdd000, and got the game to show up in the OpenManager/BM. When I try to run, it says "are you sure you want to direct run without exiting to XBM" or something. Suffice it to say...I can't get the game to run
anyway, I would appreciate a hint as to where to start reading...I seem to be missing some pretty basic info.

Seems like you're pretty close, don't use direct launch, there are a handful of titles where doing so will hose up your file system.
Instead, put a real PS3 game into the drive (doesn't matter which) and then go in to open manager and don't direct launch the backup you are trying to play, instead just push 'x'. This will kick you back out to XMB and when you go to Game - > $theDisc you'll notice that the game listed as being in the drive won't be the physical game you placed in the drive, but rather the game you told open manager you wanted to play.

thanks...finally found my post thread
i can get the list of games to show up in gaia manager, or open manager.
I insert a disc, select a game, then hit X and get dumped back to XMB
The game I selected shows up to run, but when I run the game, I just get a black screen. Any idea what I am missing?
I've tried with both PSGroove and Hermes 4b payloads, but I get the same result.

Check psjcl.com and make sure the game is actually supported, not all games work.
