Safe to delete foreign language files from internal drive?
Safe to delete foreign language files from internal drive? –

While copying some games over to my PS3 (LBP2 in particular) via BlackB0x, I noticed TONS of foreign language stuff (Russian, Spanish, French, etc). Is it safe to nuke all those? I doubt the game will ever access them since it's using my console's language setting (English) but I wonder if a patch comes down that needs to copy them over what would happen? Even so, shouldn't the patch be smart enough to know I'm using an English language setting and only pull the English files?
My main concern is squeezing as much drive space out of my 640 gig internal drive as possible. Right now I'm copying over Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing and there's a crap ton of 30K audio files from allllllllllllll sorts of different languages and would love to nuke 'em.

and why don't you try and see what happens?

I`d leave them on to ensure compatibility in the future mate. Just get a 1tb external if u need more space. Plus if ever you decide to torrent your backups for the poor soles in Europe who`s discs are damaged (which ain`t allowed, but people do
) then they will be eternally thankful.

Actually, move them to a safe place on your PC hd via FTP and try it!

If you want to test it yourself, just use MultiMAN and go to its File Manager and "move" the files elsewhere on the PS3 HDD, then boot the game. If it works, you know it's safe to delete them.

I'll never understand why people troll. Seriously. If you have nothing to add to the conversation, MOVE ON! For your information, I posed the question thinking somebody else had already tried it thus saving me some time because 1) transferring lots and lots (thousands) of 30K files to the PS3 takes a while and 2) I'm not at my house else I'd try it and post up a little tip with my results for anyone thinking of doing the same. Unlike you, I have things that adults need to do which require leaving the house. I have my own money and can buy whiz bang smart phones that let me surf the internet away from my house. Once you grow up and leave your parent's place, you'll find you have less time for games than you imagined but you'll probably find plenty of time to troll.

I was thinking about getting a big ass external drive but I hear about the occasional game from time to time that has files over 4 gigs and will need launched from the internal. My entertainment center is jam packed with a big HDTV, Wii, XB360, cable company DVR, PS3, DVD player and a Western Digital media box. I could probably stuff a little external drive in there somewhere but it's getting way messy and I'd like to keep everything on an internal drive on the PS3 and maximize the hard drive real estate.
As for torrents, I'm afraid my friends across the pond are on their own. I know to many people that have been busted by their ISP for sharing stuff on torrents.

I'll be home later tonight or tomorrow morning and will post the results of that test. I was thinking of doing just that (what you mentioned above) when I got home. Somebody else in the thread mentioned to just FTP it off the drive but I'll probably use MM because FTP'ing all those files (thousands of 30K files) takes longer than I'd like so just moving them with MM would probably be the better choice.

I often delete all the moonspeak files from my ps3 games.. no problems at all.. (i mostly try to keep the folder structure intact though (so only deleting the containing files))

yes you can delete not-needed language files (or even some videos if u dont want them), i live in europe and thus my games are mostly multi5 for example, i back them up and then transfer them to my external or pc mostly and search the backup for useless stuff i can delete. havent had a single game so far that wouldnt work coz of deleted language files and sometimes u can save quite a lot of space (a few gb is quite realistic for big games).
in case one day something might not work, the safer way would be to actually replace the useless files with dummys (empty files), for example by creating an empty txt file and renaming it accordingly to the original filename of the deleted file. i do this with videos (intros or useless bonus stuff for example) as well.
