Its bin asked a 1000 times before, all PS3's can play PS1 games. But the most of them dont work, i dont have to knowlage to explain why (something with the DVD layers i gues). Also there is a emulator but its slow and it wont run any games.

But now there is te Cobra USB that alows you to play PS1 games so hopefully someone ports it to CFW.
SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, IM FLEMISH... (Belgium)

As has been said all PS3 consoles can play original PS1 discs, but not all of them.
The latter is because the BD drive is unable to read subchannel data without messing up.
(It 'error corrects' the abnormal data used by PS1 games for copy protection checks.)

This makes it completely impossible to play many games from the original PS1 discs, including such Squaresoft releases as FF9 (all regions) and FF8 (Europe but not USA). Fortunately FF7 is not affected by this, as subchannel protection was not yet common when it was made. So to my knowledge none of the FF7 releases used that method.

Summary: FF7 is one of the games that should work fine on every console in every region.

edit: and that's because ff13 is so boring simple and superficial, just so bad that i want the old game back
    I agree.

FF7 is one of the worst games of all time when it comes to eye-candy, but one of the best Fantasy RPGs of all time when it comes to pure RPG freedom, variety and enjoyment (with some other early Squaresoft FF?'s fighting for first place).

FF13 on the other hand is really bad when it comes to RPG freedom and variety, and not very good for overall enjoyment, except with those who favor eye-candy above all else, since it is very good at that one thing.

    Edit:
I almost forgot to add that using the kmeaw CFW makes no difference at all to the PS1 abilities, compared to using official firmware.
I just tested it myself by booting the first disc of FF7 on my own PS3 with kmeaw CFW and loading a gamesave from a game I started using the PSN version (identical to the CD version, but with the disc images installed to HDD).

    Best regards: dlanor

but will i be able to play a backup?

i assume that when you mean freedom you mean complexity, deepness, fun, and meaning alltogether
if rpg ment eye-candy i'd view a movie or something.. seriously, seeing so many people agreeing is just revolting.. how could they? how could they "take" from the series, instead of adding something?

No, no backups yet. Cobra USB have a solution, but it requires you to buy their dongle and for you to be on 3.41. They say they're working on a 3.55 solution too .. and the dev of Iris manager is "claiming" to have a solution for Iris Manager, but so far he has offered no evidence or proof to substantiate that.

Just wait for the homebrew community to work on Cobra, or go buy one =)

No, just like Sabin1981 said, that has no chance of working.
At least not by any normal methods, either by Sony or homebrew standards.

The only known way to do it without that 'Cobra' method is to take your PS3 apart and indulge in some heavy-duty disc swapping (quite likely to ruin the console.) And for that to even be possible you must of course have some suitable original PS1 disc to swap from...

    In essence, yes.

Because tons of users are not really RPG fans, and really want these movie-like RPGs where the user has little real RPG control over what the characters choose to do. They apparently enjoy simply following a predetermined script, step by step...

There would be no point in buying one now, when it requires backing to 3.41.
I'd rather suggest that he find and buy some original FF7 discs, though they are getting scarce now.
