Hi,
I bought the PS3 (it was in service mode) 2 years ago. I was successful a while ago taking it out of service mode and upgrading it to 3.55CFW. That in theory, proves that the logic board is fine. I opened it up and the laser wont light up. So it is a dead laser.
is there a definitive how to on how to do this?
I am on 3.55kmeaw and installed the latest multiman. Every time I start homebrew or backup, I get a black screen.

Your BD logic board has gone out...The logic board and the motherboard of your PS3 are "married" meaning they will only work with each other. You cannot just switch drives or boards and have it work. It is possible to do, but its not easy work at all as it requires unsoldering the nand on your bad board and then putting it on a new board. Easier and cheaper to buy a new PS3 than attempt the fix unless you have very good soldering skills.

so again, is there an how to explaining the step required? Obvioulsy, a plain CFW 3.55 + standard multiman install doesnt do the trick :(

Tried installing any homebrew? Do they all blackscreen too when running? Even if your supposed logic board was fine, have you checked all clips, etc on the ribbon cable? And, standard firmware upgrades should be checking to see if the board is there, and will not continue if it isn't, but that's not always the case. I'd say to reinstall 3.55 OFW and then 3.55 kmeaw just to make sure it wasn't a bad flash or something along those lines.
Well, the ps3 was in Service Mode with a broken laser when I got 2 years ago. I was able to get it out of Service mode with a broken laser not opening it. All homebrews I have tried blackscreen, multiman, gaia etc...
I might try your suggestion OFW->3.55kmeaw again.

Another person here with just a board attached and no drive at all (leaving room for a 3.5" HDD upgrade soon).
I'd check the connections on the logic board and motherboard, make sure everything's snug. Even if it looks right it might have moved since you put it together. I've successfully updated then straight away tried another and it got locked into the update loop, adjusting the cable fixed the problem.
Your results are saying the board isn't communicating with the PS3, so it's either not connected properly or it's dead. Since it worked to get you out of the update, it must be loose.
Are the clips that hold the silver ribbon cable still there? They break fairly easy and unless you're used to it, they can be awkward to fix 100%. I cut up plastic milk bottles and use that as a shim, just scrape one edge with a knife to give it a diagonal edge to slide into place and careful not to damage the pins (if you're going that route).
