PLZ HELP!!! IT CANNOT BE THAT THERE'S NO SOLUTION OUT THERE.
I have the same problem with MGS4 and could not play, like UNCHARTED 2 I only see turn the dagger
Try this, if you're willing. Delete any game saves and game data regarding MGS4. You don't have to delete the game itself from internal or external, just remove any game data and game saves.
Run MGS4, reinstall the game data and see if that helps.
I just remembered that's how i got mine working. I run mine from external with multiman. But I will tell you this, something strange happens with mgs4 that I have yet to encounter with any other game, at least for me it happens. When running from external and having the game data installed to the external, If I play and don't complete an act, "Sometimes" the next time I'll be asked to reinstall my game data or I'll get the problem where I can't get past the Menu screen due to no controller response.
Only way to get things back to normal is to delete everything that deals with MGS4 (Game data/Game Saves) and reinstall game data.
That's what works for me. Sucks though that it happens to me randomly. It could be because I haven't actually played through an act, idk.
Try that out and see if it works. If it doesn't then I'm out of suggestions short of deleting the game and re-backing it up.

If you have these symptoms with MGS4:
Game runs on start up
You see devloper studio icons
you see the press start option
When you press start the menu is displayed but no buttons respond.
You have a problem with the BIG file. You are either playing on external and have split files (game will run but freezes like that). Or you arte running from internal and the BIG files is phucked or split which will cause this problem.
I suggest checking with MM filemanager and see if the game has split files. If it does thats, your problem. You need to merge the split files to one to play the game. Often times the split files end in a .666XX extension
If not I would delete the game and recopy it over. If this does not fix your problem, you probably have a bad copy. Sadly you will need to re-acquire a copy.
PS MM 2.00.2 can now run split games on external with the new BDEMU2(hermes payload) by copying the cache over to internal, look up a tut. on here somewhere if you are interested.
Source: Myself, currently running MGS4 on 3.41MFW external, previously had menu freeze problem.
I too am running MGS4 on 3.41cfw external through use of Multiman's new Cache system for split files. My question to you is, do you have game data installed on external or internal and have you tried external game data install?
I ask because as I mentioned above i have problems occasionally where I'll need to delete all my game data and saves to get everything back to working order. I believe my problem lies with my game data being installed to the external.
I have a theory, since I haven't actually sat down to play through the game and have kind of just messed around with getting it to start. I believe that without completing an act all the way through causes the data to be misread upon restart of game with the game data being installed on the external.
To test my theory I will have to complete an act and exit game then restart game to see if I encounter any problems.
Anyway let me know what your exact settings are, if you don't mind. As I said I think my problems lie in the external game data installation.

Do a real permissions fix, not the MM one. Fix Permissions 3.55 pkg is what you need.
Neil,
I did not have the game data installed, but my save games for MGS4 did not need to be deleted. I installed the game data on the FREEZE run (read below) and when I restarted the ps3 it did not need to be reinstalled.
Ok my exact steps for the MM external play with cache on MFW 3.41...
Dl MM 2.00.01 and the NEW BDEMU2
install BDEMU2 pkg for 3.41
install MM and switch payload in the setting menu (should show hermes)
exit MM and turn off ps3
turn on ps3 and boot MGS4 off external (with split BIG file)
MM will prompt to install cache to internal (12GB file if I remember)
MM will exit to XMB
Now if you start MGS4 at this point it will run BUT FREEZE AT MENU, just like it would be if the BIG files were missing
Instead turn off ps3 and turn it back on (yea annoying I know but this is the last time)
now when your ps3 boots, run MM, run MGS4, and select from either disc or apphome (dunno if it works discless)
tada it now does not freeze
For some reason I had to restart my ps3 before running a game with internal cache
If you are running 3.41 MFW these steps should work, if you are running a cfw, like hermes or rebug for 3.41 I don't know if anythings diff, I've heard but not confirmed rebug does not work with this, but hermes should as its his payload that makes this work.
I fixed my problem. I just activated the permissions before-hand via the multiman manager.
