Well, internal will always be faster as the BD drive and your HD both have SATA II connections, where-as your external is USB.
true....but the ripping times were ludicrously slow originally...like several hours to rip the larger games with the original BM1 onto external from reports.....as if something seriously bottlenecking it.
I'd expect it to rip a bit slower, by a few percent, but not that much slower than going to internal....USB2 is pretty fast for file transferring and never would take so long (with equivalent size files) on a pc or even a 360.....so I think perhaps the payload or the ripping methods at the time perhaps halting unintentionally slowing the external speeds down by large margins when its in ripping mode
Well, just as with when you're copying files with a PC to a USB drive, when copying a bunch of small files off of a disk to anything will take a large amount of time, compared to copying a couple of large files. My backup to external times have varied extremely based on this fact alone. I have backed up some games with OM, and they seem a little faster, but then again, I'm not deleting a game that I've backed up with the other to see if it's any faster now. I guess if I get some time this weekend, I can try timing the difference between the original BM and OM and see if there's much of a difference. Unless, of course, someone wants to test it first.
I'm not convinced it would drop to usb1 speed.....as not sure, but guessing that USB1 speed wouldn't even be fast enough to stream bluray quality video through it...so would take even longer than the times people were reporting.
I use 3.5" external drives in a docking station (which powers my popcorn player, 360, wii and ps3 via a selector switch). The hdds are a mix of 7200 and 5400rpm drives. Even when copying on pc (through usb) to the hdd you can certainly notice a drop in speed for copying files over, be it movies or games, probably about 20-30% slower at a guesstimate (mostly noticable when extracting 360 games of similar size (but various numbers of files)...and though I don't have any exact speeds written in front of me when used on pc, it suggests that USB2.0 is bottlenecked a bit when used with a 5400rpm drive...and so usb2 can keep up with 5400rpm....even if it can't necessarily reach the speeds that my 7200rpm drive is capable of.
However 2.5" drives, like that used inside the ps3, aren't 7200rpm drives anyway....so not counting a few overheads, the usb should have been relatively close in speed to it, and not in the region of 4x slower.
I don't think this speed difference really happens/noticable when playing actual games though on external (with exception of the silly load time in Modnation Racers but I think that is a different issue).
Maybe...when its ripping on the BM, its ripping chunks of data to the internal first, stripping the encyrption, and then having to write that data to the external and remove from the internal each time.....that could explain the really slow speed I guess as over double the amount of data transferring then plus a bit extra for deleting temp entries
Either later tonight or in the morning, I'm going to try ripping my LBP and Ratchet Clank Tools games over direct to external so will time them when I do (to a 3.5" 5400rpm drive)
started some tests now anyway.
Originally...using BM1 the other week, I'd transferred Siren Blood Curse from original to internal drive. I couldn't note the actual time though as I'd flicked to tv channels for the kids, checking it periodically...but it finished copying somewhere between 30 and 55minutes after starting it.
I've now just set the game copying from Internal to External (3.5" docked 5400rpm drive).
Total Size - 21.71gb
Number of files - 1890
Time taken - 31mins 35seconds
So time for that pretty good, and proves that the usb is running in usb2...even if its not as fast as it would be for say a PC to transfer those same files. Transfers direct from disc to external should therefore not suffer by as much as 4x the time like some were reporting in the past. (Maybe up to 2x as unknown time as how long my original rip took)
I've now set Little Big Planet - pal release....copying direct to internal drive...from disc...so will post when I see the time taken. If anyone could try copying to internal to compare would be appreciated.
this is where i am with it. i also tried using my old 250gb thats never seen jailbreak. transfered across from my external to internal. started up f1, save error just after the interview. restarted played again, got a bit further but cant exit...
so gave up on that and put my 500gb back in, deleted my gamez folder with f1 and eyepet in it.
installed rogeros manager 6.something...1 maybe?? lol
instaled f1 and eyepet from external to internal without patch mode of coarse then get a ****in eboot error trying to start eyepet in patch mode.
decided to give the benifit of the doubt ro fixpermissons again lol, ran it fixed the eboot error, game runs in patched mode so far ok, i imported the saves back again as well, that made it crash/freeze, ran fix permissons again...ran eyepet worked all good with the old save (save from 2 days ago v1.1hex and patch mode) so that works, but in patch mode.
f1...
intermittent save problems, can get into game using old save after fixpermisson, can be racing and saving fine for like a hour (maybe 45mins..) then saves **** out and will crash on exit. very strange, but to be honest the game sucks anyway lol works allgood in patch mode though.
super street fighter 4 i havent reinstalled yet, i just put it on from disc last time and it worked all good. fingers crossed it doesnt develop some problems
i understand this is a very early fix, and theres bound to be another 50 rev's from hermes before everything is running perfect.
could it be blackbox 1.1 messing shit up? although, i havent actually ftp'd anything over so maybe not lol
Little Big Planet test :
copying from Blu-Ray to External (3.5" docked 5400rpm drive).
Total Size - 8.39gb
Number of files - 235
Time taken - 18mins 8seconds.
To me those times seem perfectly acceptable and proper speeds I would expect of something acting like it should.
So, maybe
1) the issue is for people using self powered 2.5" drives
2) its since been resolved with OM versions over BM
3) I simply haven't yet tested the main problematic games for copying over.
I do have a few more I need to copy over still - but other half wants a movie on so will have to wait til either later tonight or tomorrow when can test the larger sized games.
If I can find out where the old time/speed comparisons for rips are I can compare......
Thanks for testing this all out. Better put on that movie, otherwise you'll get your PS3 access taken away for the weekend![]()
still trying to find the link - am sure there was a thread shortly after psjailbreak came out that people were doing speed comparisons!!!
And hell yeah..she defo wears the trousers in this relationship![]()
